Hi there
i picked up 3 Erik Hoglund Boda paperweights today. They are the ones with the stylized boys face and shoulders (page 267 in the new 2009 millers price guide, bottom left) does anybody know the year these where designed or made between??? I have 2 amber and 1 colbolt blue. 7.5cms by 8cms by 2.5 deep
I was quite amazed when the lady said 10 pence each.
many thanks
michelle

ebay never ceases to amaze me i sold the perfect amber one of these about 2 weeks back ive just sold the damaged amber one and it made just over £10 more than the perfect one!!!

It is a funny old world, I was one of the watching non bidders, that was a very good price. I am almost tempted to flog mine, it too is a bit battered. Remember this sale when another item doesn't go so well (and take heart), ebay prices tend to be up and down.
The item was listed in ebay pulse (art glass) as one of the most watched items, http://pulse.ebay.co.uk/Art-Glass_W0QQsacatZ955 so it had plenty of attention.
I once sold a damaged bit of Riihimaki (chipped and scratched), a simple red vase. At the same time somebody else sold exactly the same item but in good condition. Mine sold for over 20 pounds, theirs went for 5 quid. I studied the listings to try and work out why (I was honest about the condition) but the differences were not easy to pin down. Selling can be an quite an art and after that I think it is 'in the lap of the gods', and I am a long way from superstitious let alone religious.
Selling can be quite a buzz though.

oh yes ive definatly learned to take the good with the bad on ebay, but thats the risk you take, i tend to start almost everything at 99p if it goes well then good if not you learn and move onto the next find.. the best part was i only paid 30p for all three, the other 2 went for just under £30 each so im very pleased ;D ;D

back to the object in question. These little bowls were the first thing EH designed for Boda. He made many different versions in different color and shape. This particular piece is from the 60's I think. I can check more properly later tonight. I have nice set with 5 pcs in the original Boda box, very rare to find!
-
A set of five, that sounds good. Were they sold together as a set, all in the one box and what does the set consist of? Any chance of posting a photo? ;D
Apologies for the rapid fire questions.
John

yep no problem, i have two sets
-
WOW :o gorgeous sets and lovely to see them with original box, there is one of the bull on ebay at the moment in green http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250469573385&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&salenotsupported
(not one of mine by the way, just one ive been watching)
thanks for putting the pics on shows the different styles, do you know if there where more designs? or is this the full range for these ashtray/paperweights?

Daniel, what great photographs and such fantastic glass. Mr Hoglund knew a thing or two. I am very  Thank you for posting them.
John.

Thanks guys!
I do have approx 300 pieces from Höglund. Glass, wood, metal, oilpaintings, drawings. I have pieces from all the places where hr worked except for Pilchuck.
-
Daniel, I am always pleased to here that someone else has the collecting bug (and a ridiculously large collection) because it makes me feel a little less crazy and it is good to know that we are not alone. ;D
Given your Erik Hoglund expertise/obsession/madness :chky:, did you see this post http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,25730.0.html and if not do you know anything about the object?
Thanks, John.

The hippo was designed around 1968-1971. In 1972 it was discontinued already. Its rare i have only seen one or two before.
My main focus is not EH. Its rather pieces from Orrefors.
-
Main focus? I am not saying another word. ;D
Thanks for taking a look at the other post and also for the info. Are you sure it was designed as a Hippo? To me the eyes are all wrong for a Hippo (sunken), but I am often way off the mark and given Hoglund's style it certainly could be a Hippo.

well glass is fun, what more can I say. :rn:
My grandfather and his father often met EH at different partys around Boda. Eh was a ladies man and often in ladies/alcohol/economic problems. Thats one of the main reasons why i started collect EH items.

I have to agree! I am happy to talk for hours about the subject and send many of my family and friends to sleep. Luckily I know several fellow enthusiasts and we meet most weekends at bootsales, wander around and talk about glass and ebay. Also luckily, we have different areas of interest within glass so not too much direct competition for any bargains.
Many a great Poet or Artist seems to have had a 'eye for the ladies' along with a fondness for the bottle, perhaps they had too much humanity to survive easily in our often harsh society.

sorry about reserecting an old subject. bought one of these items last week what are they to small to be a bowl . or were they just for show. what are rare ones mine has a stylized deer
-
Hi Stew,
If my memory serves me well, they have been discussed in other threads on the board, and I think they were small individual ashtrays for the table when eating dinner.
Cheers, David :sc:
-
just call them small bowls. they were not sold as ashtrays in the beginning.
