Title: Great Site, please help, unknown vase
Post by: davidfish1212 on July 13, 2009, 01:14:10 PM
Hi, what a great site, have spent a bit of time looking around it and wondered if any of you clever people could help with my unknown vase. I was guessing 1960's Italian, how wrong am I?????????? Slainte David

I'd guess quite wrong. It looks modern and Eastern European to me. How has the matte surface been created? Is it sandblasted or acid-dipped or? It certainly has a strong visual appeal. Much better looking that what I thought were going to be my first couple of pieces of Murano.

Came across this later. You might want to check out the seller's site as there are some similarities.

Hmm there are similarities but I find these phrases worrying in that listing

My glass pieces come directly from the city of Murano ... glass studio located in italy murano city,

The seller's other items look, to my eye, Chinese; look at the paperweights

Hi, Thanks for the info, I had a look at the site you mentioned, the vases he's listing are similar but my vase hasn't got the weight round its body, just in the base. Also, could you tell me how i can tell if the pattern is acid etched or sand blasted? Thanks for all the help guys, Slainte David

Yours might not be Chinese and some of it is very high quality these days.

I don't know if acid etching is used any more for producing a matte surface but even if it was I'm not sure that you could tell on modern pieces with the availability of very fine powders.
