Title: Czech Mstisov Romana vase by Hana Machovska
Post by: jonchellycain on July 21, 2009, 08:06:56 AM
Hi there
I picked this little vase up at the weekend for £8 quite late in the day at a large antiques fair, its on page 53 of Mark Hills Hi sklo Lo Sklo the size given is 23.5cms but mine is actual size to the book infact when you lay it on the book it matches almost exactly 15cms tall, 10.5cms wide. Obviously the colouring is different too mine has the blue side stripes with a clear pinky colour centre. Its really cute, and almost perefct having just 2 tiny slivers at the base. Does anybody have any more info on these other than that which is in Marks book?
many thanks
michelle

hi Michelle,
i´ve got a ´Romana` in the known colour scheme that´s ~14cm high.
it bears a ´Karlovarské Sklo´ label. this leads to the assumption, that
this range was continued there after Mstisov closed - obviously in
different sizes. possibly your piece was made there, too?
but let´s wait for one of our czech experts.

thanks for that Dirk, thats quite interesting because as per Marks book the range stopped in 1964, but this would prove it have gone on longer...all the info is constantly changing with the new information almost everyday.. with a bit of luck marcus or Jindrich will come on and give us some more info
many thanks
michelle

Mark also states, that many of the workers left for Moser.  :)
seems they continued at least one succesful design there!

Yup, the Romana range was indeed continued at Moser, from my understanding. I found this out after my book had gone to the printer, so the information is on the Errata sheet that accompanies every book, and that can be downloaded from my website.
If you think about it, it makes absolute sense. After the Mstisov factory closed, and many of the workers moved to Moser, why stop them producing a successful design...at least for a while? They can be found in a number of different sizes and shapes, some more 'successful' than others. Personally, it's all about the elegance and flowing lines of the shape to me. I have a few now, but have left behind the ones where my eye won't make my mouth smile!
I also still think these things are under-rated, but that seems to be an unpopular view. When the design works, it really does work and is a great and affordable (usually under £100 right now) example of this type of Czech glass.
