Title: Please Help - Baccarat?
Post by: DLO777 on August 12, 2009, 03:34:55 AM
I recently received this piece from my mother, and I know that it has been passed down a few generations in my family. Apparently when my grandmother received this paperweight it was an antique. My mother seems to think that she remembers being told it was of French origin. After doing limited research on the net and looking at other examples - I'm thinking ( hoping ) Baccarat ? It is approx 3 inches high. It also has a decent weight to it. I could not find any initials or markings to indicate the maker. Anyways any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi

Sorry to say it is not antique Baccarat. It may have been bought in France, but it was made in Italy.  It is a Murano weight, probably made by Fratelli Toso. My guess is mid 20th Century.  There are images of similar weights on the  Murano project  (http://www.pwts.co.uk/pages/Murano1.htm) on which I am working.

I'm afraid we often find family memories of how long something has been in the family are often unreliable - stretched shall we say. Pretty paperweight but no cruise.  :kissy:

Thanks for all of the help - very appreciated.  So there's no possibility of this being over approx 60 years old then ?  I guess my grandmother was mistaken. Oh well, I still like it regardless of whether it has monetary value or not. I'll keep an eye on the murano project too - I had no idea about this glass collecting website but I'm glad I stumbled across it. Out of curiosity - why are some Fratelli Tosos' labelled and some are not ?

Hi

Regarding age, mid 20th Century is just about 60 years ago - but I'm not sure this design is 1950s rather than 1970s, say.  As for labels, they drop off, get peeled off, washed off.....
