Title: Small iridescent trailed bowl
Post by: david31162 on August 12, 2009, 09:18:44 PM
I have an iridescent bowl 5.5cm high and 10.5 wide. It has slight ribbing towards the base, 8 very evenly spaced trails and a small, snapped pontil mark. Is this a late C19th/ early C20th piece ? Could anyone suggest a maker?
Any ideas appreciated.
Thank you
David

It looks like a nice piece of Venetian late 19th century to me , poss Salviati or even Cappelin , will check my books in the morning . jp

Thank you johnphillip for such a speedy reply. I think you were one of those who quickly identified some other venitian glass for me(bowls with cherub/lion head prunts). I can see the similarities in the iridescence and thickness of the glass.

I agree with johnphillip. It's a small, simplified version of a more complex design from the 20's and 30's. Marino Barovier in two different books shows three similar vases, thin glass, ribbed, with  tear-shaped applications at the bottom. Two he attributes to Zecchin for Cappelin Venini, 1921-5, and the other to A.VE.M, 1932. I'm not sure if it would possible to attribute this bowl definitively, unless you can locate it in a catalogue.  One of the pieces in the books is said to be fumé, which is not quite the same as irridized, is it. The other piece is lightly coloured glass. A very lovely little bowl.

Thank you,
I really must find a decent book to help me with antique Venetian glass. However, I don't really see much to warrant one I suppose.
I can only find a few web sites with a handful of images of venetian glass of this period. Do you know of any good sites?
Thanks again.

David:

I've got a fair number of Murano books (mainly midcentury glass) and I know what you mean. I have them because I can't afford the glass they show, more than to help me identify glass I want to buy. Most of them are very expensive. Marino Barovier has a very good little paperback about 500 pages long for about $15. I'm not at home right now so I can't recall the exact title. Something Venetian Glass the Collectors Series. Anyhow, the key feature is that it's 498 pages and cheap. Not many like that. It may focus a bit too much of glass later than what you on this thread, but it does have some. It was one of the books I quoted from in my earlier post. Leslie Pina's Italian Glass isn't much good for before WWII, but at least it shows you (I should say me) glass that I can actually afford.

TxSilver (Anita) posted a couple of links to auction sites that had a fair bit of 1830's glass on them, which you might find useful. Earlier this week I think.

Hope this helps.

I'm at home and have the title of Marino Barovier's book. Is is Venetian Glass: From Modern to Contemporary. David and I talked about it a couple of days ago. There are a couple of copies on Amazon.com for $15-16 if anyone is interested. This is the lowest price I've ever seen on a Venetian glass book, particularly a 400 page one. I thought about buying it, but I have so many books already that I've broken a couple of shelves. Now if a Seguso VA book happens along...

Thank you Anita and David,
I will certainly look out for these books. I only occasionally see venetian glass at my local auction.  I don't stand a chance at getting Loetz , good english glass or scandinavian glass as more and more people are going after these. However, no one else seems to recognise/value venetian yet, so I get it for a reasonable price.
