Have picked up a piece signed Wayne D Filan.London 1970. Tried to research him and found very little. Know he was/is American and a contemporary of Dan Dailey and had work exhibited in Leeds in '71.Any other info. would be much appreciated.
Many thanks, Pat.

I believe he may have been a student of Sam Herman perhaps Adam can ask him . A friend of mine had a piece of glass that screamed Sam Herman we took it over to Sams place he looked at it for ages then made several phone calls and said i taught him too well it is identical to mine . I do believe it was signed Wayne D Filan but my short term memory is very bad but that signature is somewhere in it .
-
Yes i am sure that is correct i remeber Sam saying jokingly ,yes its so bxxxxy good he probably swiped one of mine and signed it , ~ i repeat he did say he was joking ~ .

I don't think there is much information on him. I do know Sue Marshall (chopin liszt) has been trying to found out about him for years. (PS She might be very interested in buying if you're selling. Let me know)

My friend has just confirmed that i got it right , she still has the vase it is identical to one of Sams and is signed Wayne D Filan so he was a student of Sams . Whoever Sam phoned that day seemed to know about Wayne .

MANY THANKS FOR YOUR HELP EVERYONE. I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN SELLING BUT AS YET HAVE NOTHING TO BASE A PRICE ON.

Off the top of my head, I know Wayne Filan visited london at this time. He was mostly based in the states, set up the hot glass facilities in Philadelphia College of Art in '68, with William Bernstein and Dan Dailey. (info from "American Studio Glass, p.59, column 2. by Martha Drexler Lynn).
I've a friend who was a student of Bill Bernstein's, so he contacted Bill to ask if he had any knowledge of what happened to Wayne after that, but sadly he doesn't, he was just able to confirm the visit to London. I haven't contacted Dan Dailey yet, to see if he has any idea.
Some "Platinum Lustre" pieces have appeared on ebay, of a later date than the vase I have (London, '71), they're quite different to my London one, which is MUCH more Sam Hermany.

University of Leeds library glass exhibition Christmas 1971 Wayne Filan along with many other names you will all know , Googled it .

On one of the American sites they mentioned his perfume bottles on sale at a gallery. Unfortunately I couldn't get any further into the site to see them.
My piece is blown, almost ovoid, 81/2inches high by 6inches biggest diameter, clear, with clear trails, little grey flecks amongst some bubbles. A really lovely piece I wish I could see more of his work.
Regards to all,
Pat.

Hi Sue
Been away for a few days. Will try to get a picture on to show you. Very similar to yours but more 'onion' like. Also yours seems to have more colour.
Regards, Pat.

Hello, Sue,
I Google family names once in a while and found this site when typing, Wayne Filan" in my search bar. Wayne is my older brother and is very much alive and well, living
in Massachusettes, (USA). I told him this evening about your site and he was fascinated and thrilled at the same time that people would be interested in his past work.
He was, indeed, a student of Sam Herman's, and did set up the studio at PCA in 71 with Bill Bernstein and Dan Daly.
He would be delighted to contact you directly via email.
Please contact me, John Filan, @ jfilan8 AT gmail.com and I will forward Wayne's information to you.
I love connections like this. It really is so random that I found this site tonight. Very cool.
Hope to hear from you soon,
John Vermont (USA)

-
Wow!
:hiclp:
How bizarre + brilliant.

Amazing coincidence—
I was lucky enough to pick up a piece of Wayne's at the Cambridge fair last weekend. It's dated London 1969.

*THUD* (falls on the floor, stunned)
Thank you so much for popping in and passing this info. on, John! :-*
I'm a bit lost for words right now. :-X
The Studio Art Glass Movement is a very important part of Art history, it needs catalogued and the details known before they vanish. (sorry about getting a bit morbid)
It's also wonderful that the artists find out how important their early work is. It is a bitter regret for many that Michael Harris died fairly early and never got his true recognition in his lifetime, never found out that his dreams had been realised.
That's a really beautiful piece, Robbo - you must be well chuffed! (I'm very green.)
-
Hi to John - I emailed you a few days ago - sorry for my delay in having responded - I had been away. My email address is an unusual one - I was wondering if it had got lost in your junk mail? (contains "virtualcoffee").
best wishes, sue.

A few pictures added of the piece that originally started this thread a while back.
Recently purchased of a well know auction website. (Thanks Pat if your still around on GMB, I'm delighted with the item)
Fits in nicely with my Jiri Suhajek goblet which is also dated 1970. Both highly likely to have been blown at RCA London.

Hi Greg...so glad you found the original post! And ultra pleased you like the piece. Has been sitting in a box since I first found it; gave it one outing at Cambridge but then put away. Do like the other piece you have. Kind Regards, Pat.

Thanks Pat, its a small world.
Perhaps see you at Cambridge if I attend.
