This is as heavy as a brick ,the glass casing has an ambery hue to it .Any idea what it could be please ?
-
looks Czech to me....
-
... seem to remember similar bowl by Chrystalex ...
-
thanks ,thought is ask as theres one on australian ebay as murano seguso thanks for your help
-
I have seen them attributed as generic Murano, and also Seguso, but have never seen anything to substantiate either attribution.... Does not really feel Murano like to me, and it is in none of my books. Generally I see them with a base glass of clear, and the amber is a little different.

exactly theres no labells on the present ebay one or mine i bought it as it was unusuall and not a possible murano -i love chunky glass ,i have ordered a uv light incase it glows up as it definatly has a strange colour to it and ill watch if anyone bids on the ebay one just out of interst ..thanks..

I doubt it is uranium glass, but the amber is the more unusual variant. There are so many of these about, you would have thought we would know who by now!

http://www.modernistglass.com/glasspieces/view/2334 heres the exact one !!!! they think its made by someone else tho .kerryn.

Kerryn:
I think your piece is a little different from the one on the Modernist Glass site. Look at the shading and the subtlety of the colour. I've seen a few of these, with a marked differences in quality. I've seen some fairly reputable sources give a Murano attribution, but it's also clear that some were made elsewhere, or poorly copied in Murano. I've found Modernist Glass to be very reliable and open to discussion. If they're not completely sure, as in this case, they'll say so.
I think this is one of the cases where you would have the glass in hand and know precisely what to look for before you could arrive at a reasonably assured attribution.

sorry, meant to say ´Borocrystal´ not Crystalex in my previous post. ::)
however, seems we´ll have to wait for something labelled to get a
waterproof ID.

Thankyou and im sure ill learn along the way and spot these pieces. The quality isnt poor on my piece the red has some swirling altho the one in the picture link does too,i personally cant see a difference between that one and mine..i guess time will tell..thanks to you all i appreciate it :)
-
sorry i do see that mine has more red colour but was going on each piece of glass is slightly different?!!!! thanks ..kerryn

the one in the link looks to be pictured in bright light and with white background so i tryed a white background .

"The clear casing is in fact a pale flint colour" I find this phrase rather worrying on the Modernist site. What does it mean? Flint is clear, colourless glass!
Both pieces actually have slightly yellow clear glass (i.e., not good quality), which indicates to me probably Czech mid 20th century, as Dirk said Borocrystal seems likely. That these are so prevalent in the UK, also indicates Czechoslovakia rather than Murano to me; we must have had numerous tons of imports from the country and the glass industry in Murano is so much smaller
-
i believe they mean a pale flint colour as in pale brown ,not as in flint glass .
-
I was about to make the same comment as Kerryn about the difference between flint glass and flint coloured, but I thought that flint coloured was usually a grey, not quite charcoal shade. Or is this another trans Atlantic difference?

when i googled flint colour it can apparently be brownish thro to dark grey colours and even blueish ,i have seen brown flint but personally would asociate the term with gray myself...kerryn
