Before I cleaned the years of dirt off this (and revealed the aventurine and gold base)I thought it was a piece of German art glass, but was surprised to see prunts. Now I assume venetian. I have never seen filaments like this before. Can anyone tell me the correct term and how they are produced.
Any info appreciated.
Thank you ,
David

it is probably asbestos marvered in.

Thanks Ivo,
I had no idea asbestos was used. Do think that it is Venetian?
I forgot to mention the size, it is 12cm high.

Can anyone help me to find examples of asbestos like this used in glass? Since posting I've looked at thousands of pictures of Italian glass in books, auction sites and web sites to find something similar...nothing even close!
Was I misled by the gold base to an Italian attribution? Any other suggetions for my search?
Many thanks
David

It looks to me as if someone was going for the spirit of Barovier's crepesculo pieces. It doesn't look like crepesculo, but has a similar spirit.
-
Thanks JP and Anita .
I see what you mean about crepesculo, made with metalic wool, it is the closest I've seen. Just giving me the name of th pattern led me to searches on different sites.
I thought this was a really good page for a beginner like me.

Just came across something similar in 'Murano Glass,Themes and Variations', called 'merletto' early 1950's by Seguso or am I barking up the wrong tree?Keith.
-
Sorry, Keith. Wrong tree this time. Merletto means lace. The type that you are probably referring to is made using fine white or colored glass filaments inside the glass. Merletto has different appearances. Some can look like angel hair, while others look like tatting.

Oh well,wrong tree,wrong forest,must get more books,Keith.
