If it has a hanging loop then it's meant to hang in a window as a decoration. If it's a hollow sealed ball without a loop, then it may have come out of one of those touristy fishing net/float combos that were trendy to bring home from your hols at one time.

Three inches diameter is a bit small for a fishing float!!!  The ones I have seen were all about 9in. diam.  Possibly this was made for the seaside tourist trade...

9" in diameter seems big to me as I haven't seen a glass one that size ...yet.  :) This is one I'm selling at the moment...I think it's an average size:   Measures (approx, hard to measure!) about 13cm in diameter and about 41cm in circumference.

Strangely enough I sold my last one to Tom Rizzo, who I think Angela knows.  :)

i use these as caraffe/ decanter stoppers, it stops the sticky dust from accumulating on the bottom. other than that i have no clue by whom or for what.

Floats were made in a variety of sizes, shapes and colours (for the fishing industry), some as big as 24 inches/60cm in diameter. The floats from Japan come in all sorts of funky shapes.
The modern tourist/trinket versions, often several colourful glass balls in an elongated net are made with much thinner glass and less durable 'rope' than those designed to be used from a trawler.

::whisper:: Max, floats with a distinct makers mark sell best. Hope no else is listening.

::whisper:: These floats all made serious folding stuff (for floats) on ebay.  ;D

Oh yes.  ;D

Some floats don't make much, these four did well.

My friend still has some in nets which are only about 3 or 4 inches across.
Malwodyn, yes for the tourist trade... I said "touristy fishing net/float combos that were trendy to bring home from your hols at one time." ;)
