Title: Glass waste paper bin
Post by: CEH on September 16, 2009, 04:45:51 PM
Well that is what it was called in the charity shop!

It is 25 cm tall and a wonderfull scarlet red with a ground off pontil and some wear around the base.

Any ideas about maker and age?

Cheers

Christine

I'd be very pleased for you (and a little green at the edges) if it were M*nart shape OE, but I don't think it could be, lovely though it is.  A nice find!

After looking at so many pieces on Sunday at Cambridge, I think it is probably Whitefriars.  The colour seems just like Ruby and I saw many pieces the same shape and as large.

The only difference is that the large ones I saw usually had some faint waves or ripples going round.  My one is quite plain.

However, it is a nice large piece and looks good as a stand-alone piece!

Cheers

I don't know. Have a look at the catalogues here (http://whitefriars.com/catalogues/)

I collect Whitefriars Ruby, and this looks a very nice piece of glass, but I think if it was Whitefriars it would be 'Wave-ribbed', as you noticed at Cambridge, Christine.  It's possible it is WF - there are some items not shown in the catalogues we currently have, from the 1940's for example - but I can't tell you for definite, and I don't think you'll find it in the WF catalogues on the .org or .com sites.  Sorry  :-\

Hi

Here are a couple of pics of the base.  It has a very smooth ground off pontil and there is lots of wear around the rim of the base.

Thanks for the comments so far!

Cheers

That's a fair amount of wear. I wonder if it's possible that Webb or Richardson could be responsible.

Continental production is also possible. It could be Krosno, Poland. Glass from there is high quality (with a polished pontil or base if appropriate) but mostly unrecognised because it seems that they make to contract. They have certainly been supplying Marks and Spencer for a long while; I have a jug and glass set purchased in M&S 40 or so years ago that is still in the box. I eventually deciphered the faded label as saying Krosno.

Thanks ever so much for your continued efforts!  All much appreciated!

It is a lovely piece and I am sure it is quite old from the high level of wear.

I suppose I don't really mind who made it  or when but, as many here know, it becomes a challenge to find out! :)

Cheers!

PS

Is this turning into the 'Christine' thread?
