Title: Large dumpy heavy odd vase
Post by: Margi on October 04, 2009, 06:08:03 PM
This one I feel is a very odd one.  At frst it looks like a huge heavy dome paperweight but it is in fact a vase.  It looks like an oval shaped piece of blue glass has had part sliced off to make the two blue pieces shown.  Lots of wear and has a couple of nibbles on the side of the vase itself.  Air bubbles also present.  The vase part itself looks circular with one of the two pieces attached below.  approx 18cm tall and the base is 5cm diameter.  Has anyone seen one before could you help id and age please.

Certainly seen these before, there is one on every flea market stall. They come with a little wick holder used to burn lamp oil, Country of production is Poland.

How is the wick made secure there is no means for it to be enclosed??

it is hanging in a little glass or metal holder - that is why the hole is so small.

Sorry Ivo I don't mean to be thick but the hole isn't small

Hi,
I'm with Ivo on this one, saw one just yesterday, there is a small brass fitment that holds the wick ( about the size of a 5p ) that fits over the hole.
Cheers, David

me too, see lots of these with different size holes some with the brass coloured metal fitting some without. some have a hollow open base and some are more like a hollow paperweight shape with a bit inside to hold the oil

Thanks for all your help.  As it is quite popular does anyone have a picture of one in use (complete with wick) as we have scoured the internet and cannot find a wick and fitting with the correct diameter ours is at one point of the opening 2.5cm and the other side only 2.1cm.  Would it have been possible it was used with a cork.  We are accepting it was used as a lamp base but would love to see one complete  :D
