Title: Whitefriars Jug?
Post by: Anonymous on October 26, 2005, 09:37:11 PM
I am just posting this in response to a jug that came up in the thread

http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,2754.msg21396.html#msg21396

Some of the pictures have disappeared; there is still one picture of a Martini jug perhaps by W/F that you can still see in gold which could be a consistent W/F colour

Here is mine in a colour that I cannot identify as W/F ref the jug mentioned, I collect W/F jugs, and the jug in question (9561 or M107 I think is mentioned) was done in Ruby mostly – see 1957 catalogue, it was then done in Crystal Blue and Ruby (other jugs were done in Flint, Golden Amber, Sea Green, Twighlight, Sapphire Blue – see 1957 catalogue again, but not the form in question) – in the 1967 / 69 / 72 catalogues you can see an update to Crystal Kingfisher and Ruby

As you can see mine is a green colour which is not consistent with the catalogue colours – also the handle is similar but not quite and the slim waist is also an issue on the jug in question – it does has a W/F style ‘ground concave’ pontil but so do many other jugs

I think it is a good point made in the thread I mention that Millers can sometimes get it wrong – I don’t think this is a W/F jug – we have seen gold and now green and along with the shape that is not consistent ref the catalogues

I don’t think with so many people having this that it is a Studio item, as mentioned these were highly individual designer signed pieces – I think Scandinavia c1970 is where these come from – I could be wrong and often am – hope this hasn’t offended any W/F specialists, I am only a collector not a W/F expert

These jugs?  :D

I think everyone had come to the conclusion that either Miller's or Country Seat had made a boo-boo.

A couple of these jugs have just popped up on eBay too.

I see

Your jugs are an deep amber and a pewter, we know ther is a gold and a blue (how many colours did they do - LOL. I wonder who could have made these and what date they actually are, just out of interest. I heard Holmegaard mentioned but the rainbow of bright colours don't seem to fit the profile when they were doing this type of item

Hi - it only looks deep amber because of the poor lighting. The photo of the gold/amber jug on the last thread was of the same jug.

And the reference to Holmegaard was to a different jug of mine in a more subtle and typical smoked glass - I'm still not 100% certain if it is by them or not, though...

But I blame Tinypic for causing this confusion by randomly deleting half of their hosted photographs!

Your pewter one is very similar to my indigo one here - unknown maker also... http://yobunny.org.uk/gallery1/displayimage.php?pos=-502

This is true, but it's closer in similarity to this labelled Holmegaard jug - I just can't decide if they're the same, though, taking into account the differences you get with hand-blown glass. When I view my jug from the same angle as the labeled jug is taken from, they're more or less the same, except the opening on mine is slightly more narrow and the handle slightly less pronounced. But the smoked one is exactly the same shade as my Holmegaard Aristocrat decanter.

The handle is flatter on mine and the top slopes slightly, yours look level across the top, yes?
