Hi folks
I am looking for some help in ID this vase..large piece..polished base..gold ? amber colour..bubbles..7 and a half inch high..4inch wide..very thick at 7mm (thats thick to me !) narrow at the bottom..widening as it rises..then narrowing in again but not as narrow as the base.
thank you.

Hi Jean,
WMF 'Perlora' comes to my mind, and it looks as if Uranium glass? Just a guess however
-
Hi Pamela
(novice here) so Uranium..does that mean if i shine a UV light on it..it should glow green ? what is WMF :-[
thanks
-
Yes Jean, should glow green under UV light
WMF = Württembergische Metallwaren Fabriken, Germany
(not only metal works) Had their famous IKORA, PERLORA and MYRA ranges in glass :)
-
Thank you Pamela..i will try the uv light !

Do WMF make shallow bowls as the tiny bubbles in these pieces remind me of a WF's type bowl I posted recently, have looked for a site about WMF but can't find much,Keith.
-
evening Keith
I thought this may have been WF..but have checked and can find nothing, that said, i am a novice..i did put it on WF board..had lots of looks..but no comments, so i guesses it was one of those pieces no one seems to know ? i have a small bowl..very similar..different base..have put that on WF to see if anyone can advise.

Didn't explain that very well did I?I meant a bowl I have, which is not Whitefriars, has tiny bubbles like the piece you posted and I wondered if my bowl could be WMF,Keith.
-
lol..i knew what you meant..well..as soon as i get a UV thingy..and test mine..ill let you know..
-
Jean and Keith,
it was just my GUESS, I'm not an expert on crystal glass, I'm afraid :-X
but found also a small amethyst bowl by googling 'perlora glas' - of course unsure, whether that attribution there is correct :ac1:
-
Pamela..did not mean to make you feel awkward or paranoid..lol :kissy:
if you are wrong..im sure we will find out..i googled it and seen the same bowl..the base looks the same as mine..more importantly..i liked the price
of course..mine is probably one of those ones that i would have to pay someone to take away !

I would like to put forward the idea that most glassworks in the fifties and sixties had some form of nail mould glass in their repertoire - and among those WMF with the brand name Perlora. But Empoli, Leerdam, Maastricht, Whitefriars, various works in the US and Japan and as far afield as Rigolleau Argentina made items which are virtually undistinguishable. So for nail moud glass I'd keep a large reserve in attribution.

Thanks, Ivo - I had hoped you would comment :D

Hard to see the shape from the picture, which seems to be taken from quite a low angle, and I can't make out the bubbles very clearly either. However, the shape you describe is similar to the shape of WMF Perlora 8201, which came in green, topaz, and gold ruby (goldrubin). The bubbles on Perlora are quite small and very regular. I'll attach a picture of mine in topaz. However, the 1951 catalogue of WMF (shown in the WMF book by Burschel and Scheiffele) has the height at 14 cm, 5 1/2 ".
Have a look and tell us what you think.

David, how does the base of your ´Perlora´ look like, pls?
-
My bubbles appear larger.your glass rim appears much thicker..or it could be the photo.i will try and take better photos..and upload them on photobucket..see if that is any better..

I would also say not Perlora because of the reasons you give.
Dirk: Here's a very quick photo of the base. As you can see from the wear on the edge of the base, it's slightly concave.

Thanks, David! I was just trying to figure out, if there´s any base treatment
characteristical for WMF. My conclusion so far: no! There seems to be everything:
a concave base like on your Perlora piece and some smaller vases, a ground ring
on mould-blown vases with ground rim, a ground out pontil mark, both - a ground
out pontil mark and a ground ring, completely ground base ...
-
Base of mine..

Arghhh..this is driving me batty (well more than usual)..i managed to get a small UV pen light..it did glow green, but not a lot..but i cant get it to show on a photo !..so..i bought a blacklight bulb, RUBBISH..so i need tips on what kind of UV light to buy, and how to take a photo..anyone ? im begging

A strip lamp type is what you need for photos. If your vase really is uranium glass, i.e., it glows a really bright green under UV, then Webb might be a candidate

The clear piece in this thread is definitely WMF, although with an unusual mouth / top. The yellowish piece probably is not. The Webb attribution is good, but it could also be Pairpoint. If pressed, I would go with Pairpoint, due to the pontil.

I don't get this at all. Pressed? It does not come together.
-
thanks folks..the bubbles can be felt slightly on the inside..does this mean it would have been molded rather than blown ?
-
It is nail mould glass so hand made by definition.
-
Thanks Ivo..i am learning..just slowly ...

I think Paul means that if he was pressed (i.e. urged/forced) to make a choice, Ivo, rather than meaning the glass was pressed.
-
Anne, that is correct.
