Title: By Lucienne Bloch for Leerdam ???
Post by: Anne E.B. on October 30, 2005, 04:25:50 PM
I've had this little beaut. several years now and had all but forgotten about him wrapped in bubble wrap in a cupboard.  I had previously spent time trying to ID him and the nearest I got was to a similar looking dog by Lucienne Bloch for Leerdam.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y195/glassie/daschund002.jpg

He is old, with lots of wear on the bottom of his paws, and presumably is an ashtray as there is an indentation for resting a cigarette above his tail.  He has a smooth opaque head with clear eyes, nose, mouth and body.  He is also quite heavy - 700g, and 7.5" long, 4" high and 2" wide.  There is a mould seam along his length.

Any ideas about his origins, no matter how woof, would be greatly appreciated. :P

It's a sausage holder!!!

I'm probably barking up the wrong tree.

Barking up the wrong tree = to be mistaken.

Yours looks more like Dachshund Anne, than Bloch's which is highly stylized, solid, all over satin and had his legs chopped off.
Yours could be Nachtman Germany who do a lot of part satin items, I don't know if animals but maybe an avenue for you to try.

I'm rather taken with this fawn 7 down here http://www.aloude.nl/adglnl.htm
but at 750 euros it will have to wait till next week.

Sevenfifty - I don't believe it.  I don't believe anybody would pay that for a mass produced 3" piece of Leerdam!

I checked the documentation for Stiver - the Italian company that brought you dishes in the shape of 1/2 apple, pear, frog, elephant etc - the ones you always find on markets and are never sure who made them. They also make confusing gothic replica goblets in all possible colours, including black and light blue opaque. The Dachshund is not in their 2000 documentation, but perhaps it is an older model - they've been producing similar items since 1952 and are quite a formidable outfit.

Nachtmann Bleikristall only make lead crystal and in their animals it shows. I bought a pig yesterday, which was in the same design & finish & detail as Orrefors figurines or Fenton animals and did not have the same feel as ARC (formerly Arques) products .

Peter - you have obviously seen the Bloch one that I have with its stumpy legs.  Obviously not from the same kennel as mine - or the same pedigree    The fawn is a lovely elegant shape and I can see why you like it.

Ivo - I've had pieces of Nachtmann Bleikristall (vases) in the past, and they feel  totally different to my little pooch, which of course is not crystal.  It definitely is old.  The glass is so worn around the edges of its feet.  I initially thought that this was dated earlier than the 60s.  It certainly is a great retro piece and quite kitsch - a genuine hot dog with a lit ciggy resting on its bum

Here's the Bloch Takshond

Anne the Nachtman red herring is my fault. I knew they did Bleikristal in the main  (altho I didn't know they ONLY did crystal) and I didn't look closely enough at yours.

Stiver
Ivo, do you have an example ? Googling is not fuitful save mention of a candle lamp, old coins and genealogy.

Hi, just browsing through the Leerdam bits and pieces on this site, as I have a few Bloch bits, Ducks, Ducklings and Elephants, (I want the Dachshund and the Fawn, but can't afford them, and have you seen the Leaping Hare!!? Wow, that is so lovely!)......anyway, back to the point of this note.....I have several pieces of Sasaki Crystal, that are in the shape of birds and animals.......all made to hold something, ie. the body is a hollow dish, so could this delightful little doggy dish be one of the Sasaki genre?  Just a thought.

in that case you would expect to find the triple S mark on the underside - do yours?

Hi Ivo, will have to get them all out and have a look......I seem to remember they had some mark on the base, particularly the pelican pair I have (one just isn't enough, is it!).
Sasaki Crystal is particularly clear and sparkly.......I know we are getting off the Leerdam topic, but is there any reason why Sasaki is so much clearer than some others??

I had a  very similar Dachshund bowl, it was Art Vannes France, signed.

Just noticed a Sasaki Lion in the same vein as it were.....item 310070733647 in eBay. The mane isnt satin glass though, all clear crystal. No place to park the ciggie either, but otherwise has echoes of your doggie.
