Title: Small UV-reactive vase
Post by: Tinker-Taylor on October 23, 2009, 09:09:55 AM
This 10p charity shop vase looks so very dull, but on closer inspection it feels weighty at the bottom and of some degree of quality.

The rim is striated with bevelled edges.

The whole thing is the colour of modern Vaseline, rather than the old, green-tinged version.  The base, when held under an anglepoise, looks exactly like an open jar of Vaseline - it even has the shine as if it's wet.

Height is 5½".

I would be interested to know who might have produced such a bland looking piece of glass.  It is UV reactive, so it has one saving grace!

Thanks in advance,
Stuart.

So what UV reaction is there please?

Sorry.  I would have said it is uranium glass, but am new to the UV terminology.  I have taken a photo of the vase whilst shining my rather rubbish little key fob light on it.  It's a bit blurred because I happened to be falling over at the time, but it serves the purpose I hope.

That surprises me! I have no idea. The vase looks modern (mid 20th C onwards) and I would have said Italy, but now I wouldn't even like to hazard a guess. I give you 50p for it  ;)

This whole uranium thing is a bit strange, isn't it?  I can't stop shining my light on it and smiling.  :)

I thought Italy but I have no idea why.  I suppose it's the nice finish and the other-ness.

Thanks for the offer but it might be a keeper.   :) :) :) :D

I just wonder if it might be a relative of this item I found on ebay?

It would certainly lend some weight to the Italian thoughts.

I don't see any similarity in the pieces. Italians did do a good bit of uranium glass, but they tended to use the uranium in the casing glass. Your glass looks more like custard glass to me. Is it cased? or does the white glass have the uranium?

No, not cased...  so...   ???  Who could it be?   :)

Well, well, well.  I found another one of these, which was identical except for a label on the base.  The label reads...

MARKS & SPENCER
St Michael

So that's it ID'd.

Not really. It could have been made anywhere. Do you have a photo of the label so we can guess how old it is? M&S buy their glass from all over and have done for many years.

(Dartington made a whole range for next in 1987)

I don't have the label but can describe it as being an inch by half an inch, clear plastic, and with "Marks & Spencer" in their typical font and "St Michael" in their typical italics below that.  All print is black.  My guess - because of the label being clear plastic, similar to 1980's Wedgwood labels - is that it might be from the mid to late '80's.  It also has the general look of a label dating from around that period (I once worked in the labelling industry for just under 10 years).

1990's cannot be ruled out, but the general shape of the vase itself is so similar to some 1980's Wedgwood designs.

One thing for sure is it's definitely not 21st century, as M&S ended "St Michael" in 2000.

Any further help greatly appreciated.  I no longer have the vase but am still interested.
