Title: old celery vase with reg mark on base.. any ideas?
Post by: jonchellycain on October 27, 2009, 08:50:19 AM
Hi all
my nan has requested your attention ;D, she has had this vase forever and wants to know some more about it, all i could tell her was it was a celery and 19th century as it has the old diamond reg mark to the base
could anybody give me more info for her??
The reg mark is almost impossible to read as its quite badly moulded (just the reg the vase is well moulded) there is 111 in the top circle and the rest is a blur
The vase stands at 21.5cms tall, 11.5cms in diameter
many thanks
michelle (and doris my nan)

hello Doris and Michelle  -  When marks are indistinct, especially on flint pieces, you can try taking a brass rubbing (so to speak), with a piece of 'Blue Tak'.  Make sure all surfaces are clean and dry, and that the BT is new  -  then press onto the mark, trying not to distort when pulling away.   Of course, some marks are so unclear, that nothing will work.    You might try rubbing a little carbon paper over the mark as an alternative, and if it does work, then don't forget you will be looking at a mirror image.   Just a suggestion.      You might strike lucky and find that yours is a pattern actually shown in one of the books on pressed glass  -  that is if you have the books. ;D   Unfortunately, celeries they were made in their millions, so bit of long shot.   cheers     Paul S.

Hi everybody thanks so much for your help, unfortunitly I'm having massive problems getting onto the board via my home pc so am having to use my mobile phone. Here is the message I've been trying to get on for the last couple of hours
in my frustration trying to read the numbers I "huffed" onto the base which actually made it possibly to read the numbers...well I put it into the fridge for ten minutes then tried again the left side is 7 the right side is v the base is an m and the top is a 30 checking on the great glass site that says isreg number 301579 percival vickers &co 30 June 1876
so it would seem "huffing" maybe another way of getting the details

Eeeek! Michelle be careful of putting glass in the fridge though, it can suffer thermal shock and crack without warning at the temperature changes when it goes in and comes out. You'll be in bother with your Nan if you break it finding out! ;)

ohh crikey didnt think of that, my nan would have walloped me one.. it was pretty cold in my house this morning when i done it so it wouldnt have changed the temp a great deal i dont think just wanted it to cool enough on the base to create the same temp as when i first "huffed" on it
