Title: Wonderful old green jug - ID *Reproduction* Hazel Atlas Florentine pattern
Post by: peejyweejy on October 27, 2009, 06:03:55 PM
Here is another piece of glass that has been in my garage for two years. I couldn't ID it then and have a few ideas now. Any pointers please?

Just to let you all know that I managed to sort this one for myself. This is a pirtcher by Hazel Atlas in the Florentine pattern. It was discontinued in 1935.

Handle, shape and colour all look wrong for Florentine No 1 and No 2. The colour may be OK if it is fired on. Otherwise it should glow bright green under a UV light. I'm not convinced. Can you measure it in inches for me please and the volume in fluid ounces.

Can you unmove it please Max

Hello:

This a reproduction not original.  The emerald green colour is a dead giveaway as it was never originally made in that colour.

Is it a reproduction by Hazel Atlas and, if so, when did they reproduce it?

According to Gene Florence, 1996 onwards via an importing company in Georgia in the US. Asia seems a good bet. I have now found a picture of the Florentine No 2 repro green jug in the back of Florence.

No, it's a reproduction of a Hazel Atlas pattern, not a reissue by Hazel Atlas. Hazel Atlas was bought out in 1955. A fair number of the US Depression glass patterns have been reproduced by unknown companies not in the US; DG is a big market.

There are also examples of moulds moving to different companies within the US and being used, but these tend to be marked appropriately and are sold more openly, i.e., not on fleamarkets, which is where these first appeared apparently.

I guess Google let me down here.

Suggestions of where to put this then?

I have a double garage full of glass! I started collecting about 4 years ago and moved two years ago and it's been in the garage ever since. Don't know what's in there - I may be surprised!
