Title: controlled bubble ashtray
Post by: Venus on November 17, 2009, 09:10:16 PM
I recently purchased a very nice controlled bubble ashtray in green which is round and has a part pulled rim and decorative 'swirl' next to it.  The small base has a felt(?) protector and it is not signed or marked.

I bought the piece with a Whitefriars controlled bubble 5 lobed vase (pattern 9775.)  Although the item does look like Meadow Green I have done some research and it does not look like this is a Whitefriars pattern.

Does anyone have any ideas please?

Your ashtray is most likely generic Murano

Agree. There are two others down in murano that are the same. A blue and pink one. One has a label, which is a common murano label seen on pieces. Shame about the felt protector  ::).

Hi there,

Thank you for your opinion.  Do you have photographs of the other Murano ashtrays which you believe are the same, as I would appreciate it if you could post them  The great news is I've managed to remove the felt protector very easily after all :)

Forgot to say could you please let me know in what year the Murano ashtrays you refer to were made?

They were probably made throughout the 1950s, 1960 and 1970s.

Hi venus, here is the link.

http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,29477.0.html

They are down in the murano section under 'frilled bubble bowl' posted by ejean. One is mine and the other is ejeans. I think these ones were made from the later 50's/early 60's and onwards. Am glad the felt was removed easily enough!

Thank you very much for attaching the link, I much appreciate it.  Mine doesn't have any 'frills' though it does look very similar apart from that. I don't suppose you have any tips for cleaning the 'swirl' area of dust, avoiding any damage?  If you find out any further info could you keep me posted please?

Many thanks.

Warm water and cotton buds should do the trick. You could let it soak a little first. If any new information comes up on these bowls, i am sure it will be posted here. ;D
