Title: Exeter?
Post by: lyndhurst44 on November 25, 2009, 12:16:12 PM
I recently purchased this small vivid blue vase. What confuses me is that there is an etched base mark Exeter and I cannot find anything about it's origen. Has anyone come across this maker's name before please.
Thanks,
Bryn

Bryn — Exeter may not be a maker's name at all.   Placenames were always popular as pattern or brand names, more so if they were cathedral cities and other attractive places, easy to spell and pronounce, and located in your target market.   So Chester, Durham and Stratford would have been frontrunners in the name stakes, whereas Merthyr Tydfil and Loughborough never stood a chance.

Hi,
Thanks Bernard, that is interesting. The vase was bought at a fair in Malvern and I also saw a larger vase which also carried the same Exeter base name so I then thought I would easily find the maker on returning home. Now to try and find out what company may have used the term Exeter as a pattern. :)
