Title: tiny paperweight
Post by: SophieB on November 29, 2009, 07:47:35 PM
Hi,

I picked up this tiny paperweight (approx. one inch in diameter) from a local charity shop on Saturday. For some reason, my brain seems to recognise it as a Uredale glass paperweight (I have no idea where I would have picked up this information, though ). However, it does not bear any resemblance with the wares that this glass studio makes at present. Can anyone provide an identification?

The profile of the weight may not be clear from the last picture: it is not properly domed but a bit flattened on top.

Also, the first picture is of the top and the second of the underside of the weight.

Many thanks.

Chris Dodds of Tweedsmuir glass?    He produced small paperweights with abstract designs, but I've not seen this particular pattern.

Uredale uses an impressed glassblower, looks a bit like a Y

Many thanks to Weightforit and Christine for your replies.

I think that I have solved my mystery, though  :hiclp:. I located a web address for Uredale glass and found that they sell little glass pebbles exactly like mine. May be they do not impress all their glassware with their glassblower mark. My pebble certainly does not have anything on the underside.

I have added the url below for those of you who wish to have a look at their wares. They have some very nice glass bowls, plates and vases.

Has anyone considered that this is just the surplus glass removed during the process of cutting off the weight from the pontil.

Good point Roy! It looks very like the little button that is trimmed off the top of a crown weight when the top is drawn together.

Hi Roy, Hi Alan,

Good point but I do not think so. It resembles too much the Uredale's glass 'pebbles' that can be found on their website (in their small gifts section, not the paperweights one).

The little weight stroke a cord witrh me because I remembered seeing one somewhere before with a small 'Uredale glass' sticker.

Not all Uredale is marked, I have an unmarked piece of theirs, and when I looked at these pebbles at a glass fair I seem to recall they weren't marked either.
