The joy of job lots at auction is firstly getting the piece you bought the job lot for, secondly finding out more about unknown pieces in the lot and in the end wanting to find out more about pieces you're stuck with when trying to ID them:
Nice vase with an applied foamlike cracked layer with slight iridization. Cut and polished top.
Height: 15 cm.
Any thoughts ?

Perhaps Royal Brierley Studio-style range, as designed by the Harrises of Isle of Wight Studio Glass?
-
The rim, faint iridescence and polished inside does look like Royal Brierley studio, never seen one with that 'crackle' finish before,Keith
-
It was precisely that "crackle" style finish which was designed by the Harrises. RB wanted to be able to "mass" produce something which looked individualy hand-made. I've been discussing this white colour elsewhere with friends - it seems to turn out in quite a few different ways in the white colour. The blue and pink is more common.
-
This is the only white colour I've seen,Keith.
-
... thank you both for your input.
Looking at some Royal Brierley pieces I can definitely see that they have much in common but it is not entirily convincing.
The finish on most items seems much shinier than the quite matt finish of my piece. :-\
-
The finishes on the white ones do seeem to vary a great deal.

(thanks to suzygpr for searching for these) or just do a search on ebay yourself, to see variations!

... are Royal Brierley pieces encased glass ? most of the examples seem to have a heavy clear base ...
-
I'm not sure you'd call them 'encased', the ones I'm familiar with don't have heavy clear bases, have you had a good look at the base they are usually signed "Royal Brierley Studio' but it is sometimes difficult to see under some lights,Keith.
