Title: Rich Miller landscape bowl.

Any Aussies know anything about Rich Miller? I have a beautiful landscape bowl, signed, and dated 3.9.81.

It's quite difficult to capture all the different effects in it, and the colours change depending on whether the light is reflecting off it or coming through it.
There's a thin layer of silver inside the "sky" bits, which are "daytime" with the light on it, but change to sunset red with the light coming through it. Thus the Sun changes to being the moon. And obviously, there are all the different effects of the silver reacting with the glass - silver shiny, yellows and blues.
It's a very, very complex and accomplished piece.

Is he Australian? There was a Rich Miller who worked for Bittersweet Glass Works in Connecticut, US.

Maybe my memory's at fault (so's my typing - you should have seen how I spelt memory - what a boob I made of it  :-[ ).
I bought this from the wonderful (but now vanished from the face of the glass world - does ANYBODY know where or how he is? I'd love to know, and am rather concerned about him) Alister MacIntyre - Glasshaus, and I was positive he said this is Australian.

I did buy other pieces of American studio glass from him - a John Lewis Egg bottle, a strange and lovely "thing" by Del Matta, and my glorious piece by Jim Megura, and I don't normally forget my conversations with him!

Does the American Rich Miller make this sort of piece?

Thank-you so much! I've googled the names together, and I found a beautiful piece on ebay, which seems to be a cross between the link you've given and my piece!
It would appear my ears weren't working when I bought it. I don't know where I got Australia from.

You've sorted my mystery, and I believe it's Amenrican.

I have a substantial Australian art glass collection with 117 artists represented and c. 250 pieces. I also have a number of American items.

(1)   It is very rare for an Australian piece to be signed anywhere except on the base itself.  An exception is Richard Clements whose RC stamp is inevitably low on the side.

(2)  Most American pieces seem to be signed low down on the side.  That is true even in paperweights.

Thus I concluded that it was most likely American and agree with those who reasponded before me.

I'm fully convinced that Rich Miller is American and that I simply got my info. wrong at the time I bought it, thanks for the extra support for this though!
I would, however, not subscribe to any notion that bits signed on the base or on the side would give any indication as to whether something is American or Australian - I really think this is entirely up to an individual artist's personal way of doing something - or even a choice made based on what might suit the glass itself the best.

Rich Miller is American and did own Bittersweet Glassworks, he is known for his landscape pieces.  I am interested in seeing a photo of your Lewis piece.

I'm afraid the colour on my monitor has gone weird, these were adjusted for brightness and contrast at the time, but they don't look that good to me right now.

It's an egg-shaped thing, blue lustred at the top, but with a seascape deep inside the bottom part, that was the hard bit to try to capture - I don't know if you can see it better than I can.

Sue that is gorgeous!  I like it as much as I love my Norman Stuart Clarke egg :hiclp:   there is something exquisite about the shape and size and then the decor/colours as well.

Didn't know N S-C made eggs! Can I see?
I have two rather nice bottles by him, I like his work, but as you can see, I don't "collect" him - haven't got that definitive third piece yet!

The thread is here Sue.  The photos really don't do it justice, it is absolutely gorgeous. Iridescent with purples and blues and incredible how it was made.

Lovely - I've not seen a pattern like that in iridescent finish before - almost like bits of fingerprints, or a bit tiger-y or zebra-ish, bet it's fantastic in the sunshine -
do you ever take it outside with you on a sunny day, just to admire it?
I'll get some pics of my pieces - but I'll put them in your N S-C thread.
