Title: Vase with Hadeland.W.J on its base
Post by: auntsvase on December 16, 2009, 04:10:34 PM
My aunt gave me a vase, it has an oval shaped opening and it is very heavy.  I've seen a variation of it in searches listed as an "Atlantic Glass Vase Willy Johansson for Hadeland."  It has "Hadeland.W.J." printed on the bottom.  I'd like to know anything I can about it's background/artist as my searches have come up short.   Any feedback would be appreciated.

Sorry, here are some pictures: http://img199.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=img0372r.jpg

Hi, and welcome to the board,

Willy Johansson was born in 1921 and was trained in the glassblowing workshop at Hadeland, Norway, beginning in 1936. He gained a Design qualification in Oslo and worked in the various workshops within the firm, including sandblasting and engraving. He became the head of the design team in 1947.

I believe the 'Atlantic' pattern is one of his designs from c1970.

Anyone else have things to add?

Nigel

I'd like to keep it because of it's sentimental value, but just so I know how well I should protect it, what's it's monetary value (roughly)?

Good summary, as usual, Nigel.

It's a design I like very much, but it's not a design that seems to command much of a price right now, perhaps because there seems to be quite a few of them. I've seen it go on eBay from $25 - $90. You can Google it to see how much online stores ask for it. I protect my one quite carefully.

Hello Auntsvase,

Maybe I'm on my own, but why do you need a value? For insurance I would understand.

I keep many things, for a number of reasons, but the most precious to me are those that have a sentimental value. So, I protect items accordingly. Most things are out in the open on shelves, on the mantle shelf, sideboard, etc., but anything particularly prescious, or fragile, is in a display cabinet.
