Title: mdina side stripe and question?
Post by: flying free on January 01, 2010, 02:10:54 PM
Hi
I think I am right from my research, that this is a side stripe?  However  the ones I have seen on the net seem to have a smaller button rim and this one is bigger. I wondered then if this is a relatively new production?
In fact I couldn't find very much information at all on these, even searching on here only brought up a few threads.   Are they very common?  Can you tell when it was made by the signature on the base?  Sorry I don't have Mark Hill's book but if anyone can help with when I would be very grateful.
many thanks in advance

Hi,
yes its generally called a side stripe vase. Marks book (a very worthwhile investment) say it was
designed by Michael Harris.
They are not uncommon, the button rims are usually earlier examples, i
would think yours is anywhere from the mid 70s onwards, i expect made by Mdina glassblowers
for another 20 years or so.
Cheers
Andy

Hi.  I own a Mdina piece very similar to this as well.  I'm unsure what is meant by a "button rim".  Could somebody explain this term?  Much appreciated.

Here's a link to a button rimmed side stripe - in the rarer amethyst colourway.

Button rims are indicative of early manufacture and the more flared rims are later.  I highly recommend Mark Hill's book - learnt so much from it.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your replies.
Andy that's great thanks.  I had been wondering if they were still being made up to now.  I would love to get some more books, however having just had Marcus' Sklo Union book and the new 20th Century British Glass for Christmas, I am going to have to hang on a while.
