I bought this recently on Ebay, described as clouds and sea vase. It arrived today, and after a good clean up I am really taken with it. Seller said it could be possibly caithness or monart.
I googled monart and couldn't see much resemblance. When I googled Caithness vase I found this - which to me looks the same apart from the engraving. http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://www.scotlandsglass.com/Caithness/ware/Galleonvase1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.scotlandsglass.com/Caithness/ware/Galleon.htm&usg=__m41Zma-jcLSdq12keZOTTGwFTng=&h=646&w=600&sz=49&hl=en&start=7&sig2=w9hX-ZbVTKZ_9J-0uBcPHQ&tbnid=PZjxIa3OM9hTrM:&tbnh=137&tbnw=127&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcaithness%2Bvase%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D18%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG&ei=KmBUS62GDs-TkAXnxLDyAQ (http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://www.scotlandsglass.com/Caithness/ware/Galleonvase1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.scotlandsglass.com/Caithness/ware/Galleon.htm&usg=__m41Zma-jcLSdq12keZOTTGwFTng=&h=646&w=600&sz=49&hl=en&start=7&sig2=w9hX-ZbVTKZ_9J-0uBcPHQ&tbnid=PZjxIa3OM9hTrM:&tbnh=137&tbnw=127&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcaithness%2Bvase%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D18%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG&ei=KmBUS62GDs-TkAXnxLDyAQ)
However I also found this on Replacements.com website http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://images.replacements.com/images/images5/china/C/caithness_caithness_miscellaneous_giftware_no_box_P0000212015S0042T2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.replacements.com/webquote/CO_CTGMISG.htm&usg=__VsfxbS9Qf1K6VPJ94MFTcFQ3Dao=&h=450&w=418&sz=23&hl=en&start=8&sig2=my-x1iyJyJO5Ddpn-LWmFA&tbnid=CwQXdZgYhAQBbM:&tbnh=127&tbnw=118&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcaithness%2Bvase%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D18%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG&ei=KmBUS62GDs-TkAXnxLDyAQ (http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://images.replacements.com/images/images5/china/C/caithness_caithness_miscellaneous_giftware_no_box_P0000212015S0042T2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.replacements.com/webquote/CO_CTGMISG.htm&usg=__VsfxbS9Qf1K6VPJ94MFTcFQ3Dao=&h=450&w=418&sz=23&hl=en&start=8&sig2=my-x1iyJyJO5Ddpn-LWmFA&tbnid=CwQXdZgYhAQBbM:&tbnh=127&tbnw=118&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dcaithness%2Bvase%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D18%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG&ei=KmBUS62GDs-TkAXnxLDyAQ)
The sky on mine looks more like the scotlands glass image, but the vase is also very similar to the one shown on Replacements. So is it old and rare - or a new copy? I think I am pretty safe to move it in my records from unidentified to Caithness though? Any ideas/ opinions welcomed. Base shows some age related wear on the edges. It is a smidgeon under 5 inches tall, and the same at the widest point. Thanks. JAK, West Oz

Hi JAK,
certainly looks like Caithness to me, Frank from Scotlands Glass is on this board, (your 1st link)
im sure he will find it and give you more info.

Hi, it looks very much like a Caithness bowl I once had (not photographed or available to be photographed anymore unfortunately). My bowl had from memory a very similar or identical pale blue bubbled effect - it had a Caithness sticker on it and the bowl was marked with a date in early 2000 (2001 is ringing a bell). Hope that helps.

The one on Scotland's Glass link (http://www.scotlandsglass.co.uk/cms/index.php?page=shop.product_details&product_id=181&flypage=shop.flypage&pop=0&manufacturer_id=4&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=6) was not in production and that on Replacements appears to have additional engraving below the yacht.
Might yet show up in the catalogues waiting to be processed...
No markings on yours?

Thanks for the comments folks. There are no markings or engravings on it at all Frank, neither on the body of the vase nor on the base.
I'll count it as Caithness though - that seems to be agreed. Perhaps it was made to be engraved and then for some reason wasn't good enough - although I see no faults with it, but I'm no expert - just buy what I like!. :)
Thanks again. JAK

Some were engraved, others were not. I don't think it has anything to do with the quality at all.
(not everybody actually likes engraving, you know >:D)

Thanks Sue, No, I agree, I prefer unengraved (if there is such a word) myself. Guess its age will stay a mystery, but I will call it Caithness with some degree of confidence now. Thanks :) JAK

As I said earlier, I personally think it's modern production.

It's possibly reasonably recent, Pip. :-*
I do remember some years ago Ray had one, with a galleon engraved on it, which was positively id'd here as Caithness, and I've got one too (unengraved) mine is also unmarked though.
Being a Scot, living in Scotland, I do see a fair bit of Caithness around.
I'm 100% sure of the id.

Here's a labelled engraved one
