Title: Cloud Glass? Bowl ID help please
Post by: AlmasAttic on November 10, 2005, 01:12:53 PM
Am I correct that this bowl would be described as cloud glass? Most cloud glass that I have seen seems to have darker striations in paler glass, whereas this one is clear pink glass with opalescent striations??? It is 7 inches in diam and about 3.25 inches in height

Thanks for any info you can provide on it :)
Mod: Pics gone, will be replaced later - I have three now. CB

Oh, I had one of these once and came up against the proverbial brick wall. I've seen them in a cloudy yellow as well as the pink. (Glowed bright orange under UV so I presume it was coloured with magnesium?)*

edit *: this would have cadmium sulphide. Thanks to Glen for the correct information!

Feel around on the underside, or on the centre inside, to see whether there is an impressed mark you haven't seen. Someone who sold one of these on Ebay years ago said that there was an impressed mark, which may have been a script C.  :?:  :?:  It was a very long time ago!

I hope someone can help more than that!

No, it's not there, Peter, I've just rechecked. It turns up every so often down here. So, whoever it was, they exported to the colonies - which doesn't narrow it down much...

If I reinstate my old machine (which I have to do at some stage to get the old stuff from it) I might be able to find an email message which contains the attribution from that ebay seller - which is probably wrong, anyway!

I think the colorant would be cadmium sulphide, Cathy.

Described as Murano and hand blown. I'll leave it to the experts to figure out if this is true or not.

Not quite the same style bowl/foot but a similar looking type of glass... or not ?

Anne - I don't think so. The Sowerby looks to be a heat reactive opalescent effect, whereas the cloudy one has swirls of a different colour. Also I the Sowerby is fully pressed, whereas the one I had seemed to have some post-mould tooling. Again - my impressions only, please anyone jump in and correct if I'm wrong.

I agree with Cathy that the Sowerby piece is heat reactive opalescent glass. On re-heating, the opalescent effect (strikes) shows, usually on the portions of the glass that have been exposed to the greatest heat. That would also include portions of a pressed pattern that stood up proudly from the surface.

And another, this time in red.

So that makes three in Australia, two in Canada. I wonder why - maybe it's just because Australians and Canadians call this glass "cloud glass", while other countries have another description? (And we searched on "cloud glass" to find them).

Love a good mystery. I am going to have to set up my old machine again (it will involve taking this one to bits though!).

Glen and Cathy, thank you. I couldn't make out if the Sowerby one had streaks or if it was an effect of the light.
