Post by: chriscooper on February 02, 2010, 03:38:57 PM
Can anyone confirm this vase is Mdina (unsigned). It is 4" high and 5" across.

Thanks

Hi Chris

Oh yes it's Mdina alright!  I'm sure Andy will be along to share some pics of his lot in this range - and he has a lot!  So far we haven't come with a name for this one though.

I think this design is often called "Sand and Sea".

It's basically developed from the original Michael Harris design bubbly yellow background with a band of Eric Dobson's "Tiger" design around it's middle.

The "Tigery" bit, to me at any rate, seems to be in the more vibrant earlier colours - I believe as time went by, the bright yellows became a lighter, more creamy coloured and flatter texture, and the browns  had less red in them - also the overall appearance of the colours have less depth.

I don't think this is anything to do with it being bigger pieces getting flatter as they are stretched into shape, as the flat design appears on a lot of smaller pieces.
I seem to see two clearly distinct types of Tiger.
