Title: strathearn faceted, flower paperweight 1979 No 39 limited edition?
Post by: jonchellycain on February 08, 2010, 01:41:59 PM
Hi all
I picked this pretty little weight up and so far havent managed to find any info on it, would be gratefull for a shove in the right direction  ;D
I am presuming it is a limited edition the base is etched 'Strathearn 1979 no 39'
It has 5 round faceted windows on the sides and one large facet at the top
The flower is a depp cranberry pink with a mottled white effect
stands at 5.5cms tall and about 7cms in diameter
many thanks
michelle

Hi, thanks Frank but no banana im afraid the p39 is nothing like this one, but i had a look through and the flower is very very much like, Orchid - P4  although mine looks slightly more detailed in the colours. Infact taking another look im certain this is the same flower.
Any idea why mine is faceted and who would have made it??

Incidentally, a collector in Germany was buying 'normal' Strathearns a year or three ago and getting them facetted - certainly getting flat top facets put on spokes and closepacks, and maybe more complex cutting on some for all I know. So don't be surprised if some unusual facetted Strathearns turn up in future!

Alan, what would be the reasoning behind faceting Strathearn weights that were originally not intended to be that way?  (I understand if they are damaged and the alterations would somehow improve the weight and offer it a "new life".)

I am correct in the understanding the facets in the Orchid that started this thread are original to it?

As I understand it Lily, the collector just wanted to see 'lots of tiny canes', because that is what he found attractive; each to his own, I guess.  Regarding the Orchid, I assume the facetting is original, but I am no expert on these.

To answer Lily's query about original faceting ...

... Michelle's weight looks to be absolutely right with the faceting being done prior to initial sale. The link to Richard More's web page, about the PSF242, weights (see earlier post) has explanaorty text that confirms a number of points. As a general rule, anything designated with "F" in the Strathearn catalogue number indicated a factory-made faceted version of a weight (but they may have outsourced the faceting).

Richard Moore whose website you used to identify your Strathearn PSF 242 may well know this. Don't hesitate to contact him via email (see address on his website). He is a fountain of knowledge on Strathearn and is happy to share it. He has answered all sorts of questions for me in the past and has always been very nice about it.
