Title: Cire Perdue Lion sculpture unknown maker
Post by: msiscoe on February 24, 2010, 01:49:33 PM
Hello, here's a mystery: a glass cire perdue or lost wax lion sculpture, no makers mark. Highest quality glass. Can anyone identify the maker?

it's cute but not Cire perdue. I'd look at Fostoria for this type of work.

Hello, thanks for the reply. The reason I describe this as cire perdue is there are no mold seams, and the piece looks and feels like a bronze sculpture might. It could be pate de verre as well. I looked at Fostoria, and this is well above Fostoria quality, and unmarked.

If this is your item, it should be in the marketplace. Is it?

Hello, I recently purchased this, and I'm trying to determine the maker.

OK, you'd be better attaching your own pictures though, a) so we have them for posterity and further reference when the ebay link dies and b) so we can have a base picture, which is missing.  :)

Hello, I have attempted to attach my own photos, and it keeps telling me they are too large.

There is help here http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,6522.0.html

If you resize so the longest dimension is 700 pixels, that usually works.

That's really useful info, Christine! I can't resize things because I can't translate pixels (although I do understand what they are, even the principle of fractals and how they work) but those bytey things scare me, mega bytey things are even worse and as for giga bytey things, I just don't go there  :spls:.

Could I add that no mould seams does not mean something isn't moulded. Any bits which stick out can be polished off. Generally speaking it's a sign of quality if somebody has taken the time and trouble to do this.

Press moulded and well finished - no fancy procedures like lost wax or cooked powder (sorry pâte). Obviously a quality producer.  I would not discard the Americans offhand.

Ivo, if you had to guess, who would you attribute this piece to?

Many thanks.

I'd think of Fostoria or New Martinsville - but it is not really in my department.
