A lot of speculation on the Ebay discussion boards regarding this closed auction. Any opinions?
Ebay item # 320492849386
I am curious as to why Johann would add "Austria" to his signature in the 1840s.
-
that seems to be too much honour for a coursely made, quickly decorated and extremely ugly bottle. Nothing seems to fit there - not the shape, not the finish, not the quickly sloshed on paint - I think someone somewhere is rolling on the floor with laughter and scaring the cat.
-
Spot on Ivo,poor finish, bad paint job etc...who'd have the cheek to sign such a piece(makes some of my pieces look good!)
Keith.
-
Why is there a bid?
-
If that is Loetz,. I will eat it..... and if the $21500 bid is not a shill bid or a complete joke, I will feel deeply sorry that someone with that much money is actually that uneducated about glass..... the bidder has 0 feedbacks and the seller has 23.....
-
A for effort in terms of producing a listing that would almost put War and Peace to shame. Did anyone actually read it all?
The bid? Someone drunk, maybe blind too or a shill bid.
John

I have a general rule I follow on ebay.... and all other internet venues... If they write in all caps I do not read it or buy from them, as it is generally, IMHO the sign of a lazy typist, who would generally, again IMHO be an even worse researcher..... I think this "auction" and I use the term lightly.... reinforces to a great degree, that belief on my part....
After all, the signature has to be valid because they did not have electricity for a vibrating engraver..... and god knows they had no mechanical means of making something vibrate in those days.... they weren't that advanced were they???? :24:

I may be drank brut i primoss itwernt mi . :24:

Perhaps Johann simply had a tremor after creating such a breath-taking piece? :24:

:-\ That is about the ugliest vase I've ever seen. It is going to take me at least a week to recover. It was like seeing a pile of decaying bodies. :P
I recognize the signature. It looks like the same hand that signs "Loetz, Austria" on Kralik vases and anything else that could pass for Bohemian.
-
Hi Anita how many piles of decaying bodies have you seen , are you a serial killer ? or maybe you just love them to death .jp >:D

The seller is also offering a very rare Steuben signed piece (eBay 320491971949). This must have been during Carder's Venetian period. :24:
Did they have bullicante when Carder was at Steuben? All the Steuben I see since the early Carder days has been colorless.
-
Thank God for that! - When I saw this vase today I immediately thought that I wouldn't have given a tenner for it. Then thought, what do I know - I'm still in the learning phase and perhaps I'm missing something. It's reassuring to read that like mined glass people are of a similar opinion. :o
-
The seller wrote me that the vase was indeed a rare piece and that the person who bought it said there were only four known pieces that had the crown that this one has (on bottom). The buyer plans to offer it at auction for twice the price he/she paid. I've learned a lot today that I never knew.

Some guy in the factory was purported to have said "that is a bunch of bull i cant even consider blowing one of those green paperweight things like the iItalians make..., but that is probably as close as he ever got..... especially to an Italian paperweight line... I am surprised it is not signed F Carder USA
Their production was primarily colorless after the early 30's..... They discontinued colored glass in 1932. They transitioned towards that when they were purchased by Corning... I believe they continued to do some colored special orders but by the early 1940's it is my understanding that colored glass was a thing of the past completely, even for special orders.

Puzzled by all the confusion, seller clearly states his Dad made it and gave it to him in 1992 - seems to fit for the gold paint. Don't forget, ebay sellers really give their real name and his may be Loetz. Lots of Austrians have emigrated to the US, one is governor of California, so not really anything odd there. Had a good sale too, hope he enjoys paying eBay their cut.
-
I will certainly keep my eyes open for ugly iridescent vases with crowns on bottom! :)
-
Just had a read of the thread, i notice the Steuben paperweights signature, seems to be also
written in the same writing as the J loetz Austria :24:
-
Shock, horror, one wouldn't be suggesting foul play would one? might have been the New Jersey branch of the Loetz family,
-
You mean Loetz nee Steuben. Of course correct spelling is Lötz.
Perhaps one should ask the seller for advice on the best tool to sign glass with.
-
This is one I am not sure about. I can't say something is not an old Johann Lotz piece if I don't know more about the things he did. The company was named after him by his widow, so he was gone before the early company designs were made. I am familiar with the older Loetz pieces, but not with the glass that Lotz himself may have made or designed. I am curious to know about the vase. It apparently was signed later, but perhaps it is the signature is the correct attribution??? We need a Johann Lotz expert to comment on the vase.
