Title: Antique decanter with air twist stopper, mis-match made in heaven???
Post by: peejyweejy on March 04, 2010, 08:58:45 PM
I bought this in a charity shop today for numpence, I had to buy it for the stopper. But they don't look right, I think the stopper is earlier than the decanter which has a star cut base. Any comments please?

Is it similar to the pattern on the glass at the bottom of the thread here http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,32003.0.html

Hi Margi, thanks for the reply. I see the similarity, on mine there is a tendril emanating from each buch of grapes and the vine leaves are cut. Will try and post a photo of the leaves. I'm more interested in the stopper and where that might have come from, the stopper is over 5" in length...do you think they look like a match?

Hi I am not the best person to ask as I am notorious for marriages that are way out.  If I am honest I would say the stopper Italian and the decanter French - don't ask why.  From what I learnt so far with thanks to this board and my ever growing pile of books I would say not a match.  I think Paul likes his decanters etc but can't remember his member name - mods may be able to tell you.

Air twist stopper is close to, but not Ariel by Stuart, 1950s on.   See http://www.replacements.com/webquote/STUARI.htm   The Stuart pattern is also illustrated in Benson & Hayhurst.
