Title: Vase, Clear & White glass with oriental scene, signed - ID = Chinese
Post by: Jodiejo on March 06, 2010, 04:57:22 PM
Hello all,

I bought a vase from a charity shop a few years ago and have recently spent many hours researching it.

Here is a description of the vase - White glass (opaline or opaque? maybe milk glass, cased glass?).
Height - 9 and a half inches and around 11 inches in circumference. Oriental scene (etched/satinfrosted?).

2 ladies in traditional japanese clothing (Kimono's?) holding Cherry Blossom branches standing at the side of a hill/mountain that has a Cherry Blossom tree with a bird looking down.
The scene is on the front and the rest of the vase is white.

It has what Im assuming is Japanese writing beside the scene and 3 characters to the bottom right of the scene which I think may be a signature/mark.
On the bottom of the vase I think it has a pontil - again Im assuming after researching that it may be a rough/polished pontil which seems to be one big swirl.
The very base of the vase is clear glass and the mouth has faded gold gilt around it.

There are other marks which could have possibly been made when this was being blown but Im not sure.

Im very curious as to what the writing will translate to and would love to know how old this vase is and who it was made by.

Many Thanks for reading this,

I've got one of these somewhere and I'm sure it is recent and Chinese. Check the image under strong magnification and you'll see little dots of the screening - it is screen printed on satinated milk glass.

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

I dont think its milk glass as the base is clear, when looking closely at the scene you can almost see in between the 2 layers of glass. I could be wrong though?
Screen printed - thats a technique I have not heard of for glass but thanks I will research that further. The scene is slightly raised and looks like you could scratch it off if you scratched hard enough. It also feels matt in comparison to the glass.

Agree with Ivo,Chinese, definitely not Japanese, some of those characters look made up(spent too many hours with a kanji dictionary!)
