Title: Opalescent Ewer
Post by: Ohio on March 07, 2010, 04:47:23 PM
I picked this up a week ago & it appears in the Standard Encyclopedia of Opalescent Glass by Edwards & Carwile as Decorated Harlequin an English pattern, but no manufacturer. I know this is a long shot to say the least, but does anyone have any idea who/whom might have made it? Mnay years ago I had a smaller vase with this exact pattern & sold it (this one I'm keeping) to a lady in London & I hadn't seen another piece since. Raw pontil, slighty recessed. Glass is a bit seedy with a few bubbles & a speck or two of what looks like ash. Thanks, Ken

I have had a few of these pieces, and still have a rubina verde opalescent lampshade in this pattern.  Every time I see this particular pattern discussed in a variety of different venues, the Bohemian collectors are fairly certain it was made in Bohemia, and those partial to English glass are fairly certain it was made in England.  No definitive maker has ever been identified that I am aware of.

For a peek at the shade, click on the link.  I have never seen another one in this pattern.

Thanks Dave. That is one heck of a nice shade & I'd never have thought a shade would have been fashioned in this pattern., Ken

Thanks Keith. About 10 years ago I found a little vase in this pattern & always regretted parting with it. This one is 10 1/2" height & 4" diameter so it shows off the pattern well. Its a marvel to me how they were able to produce this pattern in a blown piece. I would think it took some skill. Ken
