Title: yes but what is it?
Post by: Ivo on March 10, 2010, 03:59:15 PM
Pressed crystal mystery, height 3" (7.5 cm) diameter 2".  The rim is polished smooth. It looks like a russian church roof... The inside has 8 ribs so it looks as if it clamps onto somthing. Broomstick or doorknob?

Could be - sounds even plausible but what are the inside ribs for then!

maybe the ribbed bits are to hold onto a stopper of some sort like a cork?

Knobs for a four poster beds ? finials for a curtain pole? door knob? walking cane? possibilities are endless

Having a lucid moment here. The rim is polished - apparently so it sits straight. The inside has ribs - so it clamps onto something - like wood, or a metal ring. And it is thickwalled. So it must be a lens for a signal light, either shipping or car or aviation.

Ivo — it's quite small, which suggests to me low voltage.   How about a railway carriage light shade — perhaps even one of those lovely double table lamps you see in Pullman carriage windows, where an extra shade over the bulb would have been a safety feature?

OR

A sidelight / indicator light cover from a mid C20 vehicle?

A long shot, but could it be a glass insulator for old fashioned electricity pylons/telegraph poles?

Although because of its small size, more likely for a domestic property. I used to have a very old house in Spain and we had these on the front of the house where the electricity cable entered the property.

Electric...that is. Possibly 1880's?

I'd go with Bernard's ceiling or side light.  It does not look as if you could hope to put a wire around or over it - so I don't think it is an insulator. And it would drag down a Christmas tree because it is really heavy....
