Title: Amber trinket set with ‘fish scale’ decoration’ – Mystery set #109
Post by: UKGLASS on March 19, 2010, 05:20:36 PM
Hi all
Starting this off here because I have a feeling this may be Bagley. I have the pattern in both a plate & a bowl which I know to be Bagley but I have never seen the candlesticks before & thought I had seen most Bagley sticks.
Hope someone can help
Thanks in advance

Not something I've seen before, although the colour looks good and so does the low form. Doesn't appear in the Bagley book though.

Hi Christine,
Thanks for looking, I have been searching myself & I would have expected to find a trinket set in the fish scale pattern if it ever did exist but I can find nothing, Im begining to have second thoughts about it being Bagley.

Another which made a fish scale pattern was the former Vincent Schreiber glassworks at Nemsova (part of the Sklo Union conglomerate), but I've not seen candlesticks or trinket sets in this pattern by them (so far!)

An amber pressed glass trinket set:
Rectangular tray; 10˝ x 7 x 1Ľ inches
Pair candlesticks;  height 4 x Base 3˝ inches
Large lidded trinket pot;  height 4 inches x Diameter 3˝ inches
Small lidded trinket pot; height 3˝ x diameter 3inches
Ringholder; height 2˝ x diameter 2˝  inches

Distinctive base to the tray, and ‘fish scale’ sides (rather like that on some Bagley pieces). The most distinctive feature of the candlesticks and lidded pots is the ‘fish scale’ decoration’ to match that of the tray sides.

ID, comments, or suggestions, please?

Some photos of the tray from the set, this time in pink glass.

So, amber, blue and pink colourways  so far - photos of pieces in other colours, anyone?

Presumably still no attribution.

Actually, on checking my files, I find that I have some photos of pieces in green uranium glass.

A bit of a mystery this time – another ‘fish scales’ set in green uranium glass, but this time with a quite different tray. The straight sides of the tray measure approx. 20cm.

(Permission for the re-use of these images on the GMB granted by kuvuandsimba).

At first sight I thought that the tray was a mis-matched piece from the Sowerby ‘Sunray’ set because the overall pattern on the tray base looks quite similar, but the shape of the tray is quite different, and the panel in the angle of the tray, the source of the ‘rays’, is patterned with ‘fish scales’ to match the rest of the set (whereas the Sowerby Sunray tray has a clear panel for the ‘sun’).

I can’t recall seeing a tray quite like this before – has anyone else seen a similar tray, or perhaps has this tray in a different colour to show?

Fred.

Oooh that's interesting, Fred.... I've no recollection of seeing that style of tray before either...  but it reflects the shape of the pot finial very well.

The fan shaped tray shows some striking resemblances to the Sowerby Sunray Tray.

Sorry about the seven year delay.  :-\ Here are a couple of photos of an incomplete set that I have in blue and a uranium green one that clearly shows both trays. It looks like they made it in clear as well ( no tray though) - picture quality is meh because I had to shrink them so much ( feel free to use any of these photos if you wish )

Tried to respond to this yesterday, but I think I hit a technical glitch so if you are reading this twice, my apologies. I came upon this set recently in a few different colours - including blue. Despite the design, the blue is so different from the blue Sowerby used on its dressing table sets. Also the uranium green is much darker than the typical bright uranium colour that Sowerby used - the photo I'm posting shows uranium green fry mystery 109. You are welcome to use these photos if you find them at all useful

Hi Walden, welcome to the board, and thank you for your super photos and for allowing us to use them in the trinket set project website.  I'm still hunting to find a maker of this set but no luck so far... I'm not giving up though!

Btw. Here is a photo of the mystery 109 tray beside the Sowerby Sunray tray. I should have used the same colour for a better contrast, in case anyone is curious to see how similar they are. Permission to use this photo if you find it at all useful

Thank you Walden, that is interesting, and it shows how strongly similar they are.

I think this has been discussed before, Pamela has the tray listed as Sowerby but with no definite attribution. I can't link it individually but it's in this section.

Thanks Nev, I've seen nothing to support the claim for Sowerby so far, other than the similarity of design, so I'd not rely on Pamela's cataloguing as she may also have worked on design similarity. Until we find catalogue evidence it remains a mystery maker.
