I take back my stupid comment Bernard, I can now see there is clearly no likeness to a pear at all....

....please ignore me, It's a bouy.  8)

Thanks, everyone, for the enlightenment on pears.

And I'm sat sitting here, head bowed in shame, as I can't believe I did that.   I actually looked up "buoy" in Bryson's Troublesome Words as I was starting this topic, and it still came out "bouy".   :spls:

Ideas please on my pw/ornament, whatever it's called.

Personally, I have never seen a blue pear or a blue buoy,

but that is OK because it looks like an acorn to me... although be it blue, and I have never seen one of those either....  a blue acorn that is....

Sorry Bernard...I could not resist.....

Bernard:

I think that the problem is that not all glassblowers can look at the design for a pear and take it to practical fruition, so to speak.

If this didn't have a leaf and and a stem on it, I'd never have said it was a pear.

Bernard,

Saw a similar pear 'object' today in red, same shape, bubbles and base finish with a very worn foil label to the base. Could just make out 'MRM' in script and 'Merchandise' below so guess it was an importers/retailers label. From the style of the label I would say 1950s.

Brilliant — grateful thanks!

GMB member tigerchips has a red apple (not without some controversy, see here (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,2636.0.html)) in his gallery here (http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-123), so mine must be a blue pear, not a buoy, however it is spelled!

TC — Please would you drop by and fill in any gaps you can manage, such as dates, maker and location, &c.

btw there's a fair amount of wear on the thin flat base around the ground-out pontil scar, so it wasn't made yesterday.

TIA — Bernard C.  8)
