Title: To share and identify a gilded jug
Post by: RoynMargaret on March 21, 2010, 02:13:56 PM
This lovely jug was tucked away on the back of the top shelf of my local charity shop just waiting for my beady eye to fall on it.  ::)

It is blown body with a polished concave pontil to the base. Hand-formed and applied clear glass handle. In the most delicate shade of peach/apricot that is only evident in the thicker metal at the base of the jug. The main flowers are etched and smaller flowers and all the gilding is hand applied.

Would most likely have been produced with 6 matching tumblers. Wouldn't the set look 'peachy'  :)

Probably not very old, but if anyone can suggest a date and maker I shall be obliged.

Polished Pontil?  Don't I see a hint of a shallow one to the right of the base? Or is that just reflection?

Not a good photograph I admit, but definitely a smooth concave depression about 30mm diameter x 2mm deep and slightly off circular. I have never seen a moulded-in pontil. What would be the point?

Unfortunately there are some fake Whitefriars textured vases out there with moulded pontil marks. But I agree, no point unless it is a fake trying to be an original!

See some info here

Thanks. I do not think it is in any way a Whitefriars piece. The decoration is more likely 1950s Continental. I can see no point in 'faking' anything on such a piece. However, I will be on the lookout for Whitefriers fakes.

I was certainly not suggesting it was, only pointing out that are moulded pontils but unlikely to be any legitimate glass makers production pieces.

I would guess that this piece comes from Borske sklo n.p., Nový Bor, Czechoslovakia, design end of 50ties, manufactured also later.
