Hi - I have a rough idea of what these are (been on a buying spree) but thought I'd share and let members have their opinion!

Bottle decanter (9.3” high), lovely blue colour with indentation to centre where a perfect 1” circle is formed, stopper is just off round and hand made. The flat circle to finial matches the one to the bottles middle, the round stopper and finial are clear glass, the circle having a textured centre with a round piped surround – I think Scandinavian c1960s - Kastrup / Holmegaard comes to mind, perhaps also Kosta?

7” high moulded vase very like the hobnail I have previously posted now known as Czech, this is fantastic as the moulded base is a shiny blue that fades to clear as the vase has been hand worked and the mid section to top worked into folds of great complexity.  I am thinking Czech under Sklo umbrella but am open to other ideas.

10” long, 7” wide, 4” high hand worked bowl weighing 2 kilos, beautiful undulating shape with shell like feel. Opalescent to a high degree with cobalt blue piping to top rim, round polished base, I really don’t have many ideas – no marks

5” high clear glass vase with three white and two blue stripes twisting up one side, broken pontil to base with ‘Glass Works’ etched to base rim. So I know the company name but I can only get a company in Seattle called Avalon Glass Works that does not seem right at all

Oh … and I thought I would add this golden coloured tapering vase with lots of optical circles - 11” high and very heavy

Decanter
with that stopper looks like Eric Hoglund's work. If while at Boda you would expect a signature unless maybe early or a second. Maybe later ater he went solo.

Pulled Vase
Most interesting. Chrbska in style but the very best of that style I have yet seen.
Is that base ring matt  ? We need Marcus on the significance (if any) of these matt base rings.
The word Sklo (glass) was used in several "umberellas". Chrbska belonged to the Borske Sklo umberella.

Shell
Looks like a wanna-be Chihuly but too thick for that I think.

Stripes
Caithness
Perhaps a "tester" ...I think thats the name for them.
A piece to keep in the workshop to act as a "standard" for the glassblowers to work to.

Optic vase
I have a smaller one the same in amber. I assume Italian. I'm surprised you say it's heavy as the base is not so thick.

Some excellent stuff to go on there, I agree with all you say. The optic vase is 1.6k in weight the base is not that thick but it is tall and the walls are not thin (4.5mm).

I also thought looks so Chihuly with the opalescent shell like piece (the blue piping), I have had the pleasure of handling his Shell forms and they are not as heavy as this, and also I should be so lucky!

Thanks for the Borske Sklo / Chrbska info, I have no good older reference books on Czech glass, I will buy 'Jackson's Factory Glass' at Borders I think, I have looked at it often enough.

I am buying books but they are expensive, I just bought 'Glassware Glasswarren Verreries Vetri Di Murano - G Mariacher' for £40.00 second hand (12.000 lire when new) and have a good local source for such books but I will be taking it step by step, I have a lot of the new reference books, it's the older books I want to acquire - this Murano book is amazing with excellent text (in Italian and English phew).

The bottle, the stopper is very Hoglund, but that blue bottle shape is almost like a square Kuttrolf, colour matches up to my Kastrup one, but designs were so similar.

I should get down to the Mitchell Library, its near me and one of the biggest design reference libraries in Europe.

sounds a serious item and a good investment but Factory Glass is a must have basic volume for the collector with interests ranging across companies and countries IMHO. I don't think you'll regret buying it.

I think this is Scottish. There was a Glass Works run by Jenny Antonio in Edinburgh around mid 1980's and later by Paul Musgrove who took it over. I think this is one of their pieces.

Bought 'Factory Glass' and a few others books (second hand, so cheaper) other day - Peter ... your optic is exactly same colour and style as mine good chance is same manufacturer even though a different shape - thanks, any idea who made these?

Tiger's has that same optical effect, but what an interesting shape, this looks like a bowl. Tiger I think there is a good chance these may be Bohemian, the bases are flat with no base rim but that does not exclude them in my mind.

I am looking into this and it seems logical since I bought the vase in Glasgow. There were lots of Scottish glass companies like 'Lanmara' and 'T.P. Young' who set up in the 1980s and are now closed, difficult to trace sometimes as they were such small private concerns – Frank is in the process of creating a database for Scottish glass makers.

That is not only a good colour match and general style for my vase, but I have pieces with exactly that same cross hatched pattern in amber like yours, blue and purple - vases, bowls and tankards etc.

I have always suspected Czech as there is a crystal like sparkle from them, Marcus tells me this is because of an ingredient the Czechs used in making up the glass, can't remember which one (gulp) :oops:

I remember someone saying that Toso makes these similar stripey glass items. Strange, but Toso would be the last person I would have thought of.

It certianly looks the same as mine, my research is telling me that this is Scottish glass and very short lived as Adam A suggests


MMM I would prefer it if they were Fratelli Toso though :shock:

Tiger -

Is your vase with the white stripes dichroic glass?  Does it change colors in different light?

I had a vase of similar form with 3 opalescent internal stripes.  The outside with a thistle cutting (sure fits the Scottish idea).  It just had initials on the bottom.  I never was able to identify it.  I sold it but kept images and have been meaning to post it to the board.

I am traveling again for business but when I return home I will try to find the images and post them.

The mark on my vase is signed Glass works. At least that's what I think it says. The word "works" looks a bit funny on mine. :)

It isn't dichroic glass. Shot in the dark but could your vase be Caithness with the initial's CG?

I've got three of these, and they're BIG!!

They're not great glass, but BOY!  They look simply fabulous with a whole string of fairy lights curled up inside them!  Anyone with one should try it.

That is the same etched mark as mine - so at least there are two out there, maybe three LOL

The blue optical vase seems a variation on mine; I would guess that the Czech companies under the Sklo Union and other will have done 100s of these types of vases. Mine is not the best glass in the world either but it weighs 1.6k and the base rim is 0.45cm thick ground and polished. I would guess that the round vases of this type would have a design limitation on the thickness on the glass

I always think that for moulded glass Czech is consistent in standard :)

I forgot to mention that my amber vase has what looks like a cross on the bottom which I presume is a mould mark. It's not polished or anything.

Is there any chance that it might be Bischoff. I know very little about the company but i've just seen a similar coloured vase and the owner thinks it's Bischoff. It looks like it has the same mould mark on the bottom.

After some careful consideration, this may be a "Sklo Union" product.
With new research material having arrived, the significant phrase is "rucni lis, hutni tvarovano" hand-pressed, work-shop shaped. This has appeared with regard to several item descriptions.

In the case of this piece, it would have been formed initially by manual pressing in the mould, hence the regimented base pattern, then the top worked whilst still hot.
