Title: Unknown pink glass bowl
Post by: Tony H on November 19, 2005, 09:18:50 AM
Hi Everyone
My wife and I have just got back from a short holliday, in New Plymouth I found a very nice pink glass bowl it has large handles with a female figure on each.

I have placed 3 photos in my unknown glass album, the bowl with handles is 13.25 inches without handles it is 8 inches, across centre it is 5.5 inches and it is 4 inches to top of the handles, the weight is 1.072kgs.

Can anyone help with an ID, I have looked at pressglass pavilion and cannot find any glass bowl like this one

Tony - it's a fantastic bowl. I had a quick look earlier but couldn't make a match. I don't have much time at the moment, but I will try again shortly when I have a mo (if no-one else has ID'd it by then).

GREAT piece!

If I would know I would have posted right away this morning - it's a real beauty, Tony
no idea at all on it - I think it was Ivo who told us to say what it is NOT:
it is not Brockwitz
it is not Walther

I'd love to see the base ! Could lead further

The costume on the right with 4 buttons
what is on the back side of that
the pullover on the left - what is on the back side of this?

obviously the upper rim of the bowl 'tends' to the handles - don't know how to express this in english - sorry!

The bowl looks extremely 'poor' in decoration?

Good morning Tony, when you are going to read this  :)

Thank you for your reply. The costume on the right with 4 buttons has on the other side pullover, and pullover has on the other side 4 buttons, so which ever side you look pullover is on the left and 4 buttons is on the right.

I have added two more photos to my album one is of the base and the other is of the bowl to show the pattern, it has six panels divided by a wavy line which is a raised mitre.

Thank you for your reply jump in again if you think you can help

Tony - I have searched through all the archive I have, and I can't find this item.

I think it's a splendid piece - and I certainly have not seen one like it before. I think we are currently going to have to put it down to "Probably European" but I don't have any information that would allow us to say more than that at present.

I have a vase and several powder jars that have female figures on which have not yet (as far as I know) been attributed with certainty. The jars have a female figure on the lid, as a finial - one is in marigold Carnival (My Lady's Powder Jar) and has not been attributed with certainty yet. Sowerby and Walther both made jars with female forms on the lid - but these are not the same.

Hopefully, one day we will be able to attribute some of these current mysteries.

Hi Glen
Many thanks for your efforts, what we need are lots of old catalogues or magazines with good addvertisments in them.

Tony - yes, that's for sure! I do have plenty and I have gone through the main "suspects".

I don't for one minute think this is from the same  stable, but I suspect may be a copied style/design. In my copy of Lyle's  Antiques Glass (page 34), edited by Tony Curtis, there is an image of a Lalique clear and frosted two-handled oval bowl 19" long. This is the only other example of a bowl with such big-ear-type handles I have seen, so thought it worth mentioning.
