Hello from down under. I am new and new to glass. but I have discovered "IT"
I cant believe after weeks of on and off surfing I have found this site.
I have the unfortunate of fortunate habit of picking up stuff that is interesting unidentified and puzzling but I don't know why. I have been all over the world on the net trying to identify who made this. If its rubbish i can handle that as it didn't cost much.

I would be grateful for any clues
happy easter and I am about to start my glass lessons in earnest

Hi Lee? and welcome to the GMB.
Sorry, I can't help with your vase, it's not my forte, but be assured that someone will know something about it.
Where are you? It can help with attribution, so it's best to put your country in the Location slot in your profile.
... and don't forget to ask for explanation if what you get told doesn't make sense. We're all still learning!

I have a profile.......I just looked! I do! :hiclp:

Welcome to the board. We also need a base shot and dimensions. Please use the attach facility, so pictures can be clicked on and blown up. When you resize, make the longest dimension about 700 pixels, as that usually is a good size.

thanks for the suggestion. I should have known to have done it before but I was so excited.
the vase is
height 25.5cm to highest point
width 7cm at widest point ( bottom)
length 10cm at longest point. The glass itself is about 1cm thick.
I cannot find any markings or number
I have put on photos of base and top

picutre of base

Does it really have a hole through it or is that a trick of the camera/light?
-
no it really has a centre hole like a donut and in all my internet time,I havent been able to find anything similar let alone like it And I beleive that was the intention in making it. I bought it in an op shop in NSW. . As you can imagine where and what I have been googling to try and at least narrow it down to a country, let along maker,
this is a pciture of the base with dead insect.
the top picture is the top

I've actually seen a few with the hole come through on eBay.au over the last few years, and that's what's making me suspect recent and Asian. But that's just a guess, and guesses don't mean much. I hope someone has better news.

Did they look like mine as I have searches out and the only one I have ever found is this
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350218724008&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT.........gosh and hope it isnt a fake.
It was suggested it could be sevres or Vannes

Interesting origin to this style of glass. The idea came from Henry Moore sculptures, which was popular with some Murano designers. They adopted the style for glass, calling it forato, so you can see some classic designs from the 50's that show this feature. It's also been copied by other makers in other countries making it difficult to attribute accurately without the presence of other features. This looks like fairly decent glass (I'm assuming it's heavy), but I couldn't say it's defintitely Murano or give you a maker.
Hope this helps get started and good luck.

wow, thats information to get me googling again. I will take all leads. the glass is very heavy: three kilos and at the risk of sounding a romantic, it looks fluid, as if it is still molten and moving, thats what attracted me to it. It didnt look as if it was ready to stop forming.
thanks

The linked vase on ebay looks Chinese or something similar. The proportions are just all wrong; something often seen on large Chinese pieces.
Your vase isn't a fake. A fake is something made to deceive. Sevres and Vannes seem unlikely, as they are generally marked, I think. I might look Czechoslovakia or even Japan.

I have just returned from a small fair, where a seller had a pair of very similar vases. With holes as above, and a very similar shaped flat highly polished base.
No labels, but appeared to be very new. Seller said they were Czech?
I have to say they were very good quality and striking in a deep emerald green colour.
I have also seen a lot of rectangular vases recently - new production from abroad - with holes. I think this must be a trend.
-
Just to add to Christine's comment re Vannes. I do see a lot over here that is not marked as some had gold stickers with silver writing and edging which can easily come off.
-
I got this from my favourite oppie who have a lot of good stuff. I was skeptical about it but it is very thick and it doesnt have the feel of "cheap repro" as one of my old mates would say.
the hole isnt the same size of both sides. The hole on one side finishes in an upside down "V" at the top where the other side is circular.

Did you ever feel that you cracked th code when you learned one thing about glass. Weoll I did. its not italian, well its not vennini. It would have been signed. I am leaning towards czech.

I believe that this piece comes from Skrdlovice 1958, designed by Jan Brož, pattern 5831.
Better quallity pictures would help me to get more confidency.
Let we wait for bOBA guess.
