Title: Advice on cleaning
Post by: gsween on April 25, 2010, 03:53:43 PM
Got this Murano, I believe, ashtray. Inside the bowl, it has like a frosty haze in which I cannot remove. I tried the "eraser" sponge and orange based cleaners like Goo-Gone. No luck. Any ideas?

Thanks.

I think you're going to clean it mechanically, rather than chemically(ie wear it away) - but at least you can easily access it, unlike inside a bottle. You could try Tcut (I gather brasso also works) a soft cloth and lots of elbow grease.

It really depends what the haze is. If it's some deposit on the surface of the glass, soaking in a solution of biological washing powder may help, followed by a good scrub with a stiff brush. However, I think it's much more likely that the haze is from water damage - if that's the case, then, as Taylog said, the only way to remove it is to mechanically polish off the damaged surface layer. There are a few threads on how to do this so it should be worth searching the board. Personally I've had great results with a cerium oxide slurry on a polishing bob driven by a Clarke rotary tool (similar to a Dremel but cheaper).

Looks like water staining to me and to be honest the item doesn't look to be worth any more effort.

Thanks everyone for your inputs. Wow, from what I am gathering here, it looks to be a chore with more effort that it is worth. I will try some of the suggestions anyway to see what works. Thanks again.  :)
