I suspect this is a Chance dish. What I want to know is which football stadium is it please? The pitch only takes up the left hand of the site.
-
I'd have presumed it was West Bromwich Albion if it was Chances but the main road runs along the goal end,on google maps, and on your pic' along the 'longer' side so prob' not,as you can tell football is not my thing, rather watch paint dry!
-
I don't think it's West Brom, Birmingham City or Albion. Wherever it is it was a big site because the football pitch only occupies the left hand half.
-
I'm thinking Northampton Town. The football club shared with the Cricket club until the 80's I think.

You could well be right. I've emailed the chappie at the bottom of that page. Thank you
Oh well I would have done had it been an active email address

Very strange that there's no legend!
You could also try posting on football forums:

Hi,
Could the football ground be the old baseball ground, Derby County?
-
Could be:

... although the curved road on one side is not really apparent on the glass tray.
The rounded corners at the one end of the ground should be a big clue.
-
Maybe a London club? Like arsenel
-
It's a Cricket ground - you can see the pavilion.
-
Another site here that might help, Christine: http://www.stadiumguide.com/
-
it's not Northampton (I asked the nice media chappie) or Derby. And yes I've been to the stadium guide...
I think I need to start with cricket. Can "someone" put cricket in the title please :kissy:
-
According to my sources it's Bramall Lane (Sheffield)

-
Bingo! Your sources can have a hug  Those triangular road patterns clinch it http://rentahomesheffield.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2006/10/sheffunitedsample.jpg
Thank you :kissy:

Oh well done! Yes, another piccie here to help confirm:

and how about this aerial view from 1948...

Regarding the change in title, Bramall Lane is much better known as a football stadium for Sheffield United FC. Yorkshire cricket is most often played at Headingley (also a test venue). From http://www.yorkshireccc.com/the-club/s/3
The Club play their matches at Headingley Carnegie Cricket Ground in Leeds and also play home games at North Marine Road, Scarborough – the home of the world famous Scarborough Cricket Festival.
-
As the plate Christine has the open side to the pitch, the photo used on it must pre-date 1973 when the stand was built there. yesvil's link says that the last Yorkshire cricket match played there was also 1973 - just before the stand was built.
More on the history of cricket at Bramall Lane here:

Interesting, isn't it? :)

Well, I hate to labour a point, but it does state on that first link, "Even in 1902 it was primarily a football ground..." and "... Yorkshire's headquarters were at Bramall Lane until they moved to Headingley in 1903." Agreed, Yorks CCC may have used the ground on occasions, like they use Scarborough today.
As for dating, the use of a monochrome photo could (and probably does) date it as far back as the 1950s.
