Title: Could This Thing Be Blenko?
Post by: BJB on November 27, 2005, 11:02:25 AM
Hi,

This is another of the things that has to find a new home   I bought this years ago before I even had a real interest in glass and its been stuck on the side ever since.

http://tinypic.com/hva149.jpg

Its a crackle glass container with lid and it stands on a base which looks like an ice block, so it may have been an ice holder in a soda shop? It has a slight iridescent  sheen to it and it is about 2'tall.

The base is flat and has the same crackle decoration on it.

Its a whopper and a real talking point, and I haven't a clue how, if it sells, I am going to wrap and send it!!!!

Barbara

Hi Barbara, I have thumbed through my books on Blenko and the ones on crackle glass and nothing turned up. I agree this looks like something you would find in an old time soda shop to hold ice water or some drink. How tall is it? Terry

Hi Terry,

It is well over 2 feet high and it really is a stunning and unusual piece, but it now isn't going to fit with the new decor, so its time for it to go!

I looked at the Blenko sites as well and couldn't see anything like it, so might it be commercial rather than the general run of the mill things made for the general public?

If its not Blenko who might have made it?

Wow that is big. It almost has to be a commercial counter display. As to who made it? that is the question and way out of my league. Sorry couldn't be of more help. Terry

Oooh I think I may know this one. I belive they were made in Bohemia and used in the maturing and dispensing of some fruit schnaps type of drink. I once had a green crackle glass on with 8 matching small glasses and the glasses still had the Bohemia labels on the bases.

Hi Paul,

It looks as though that might be the answer! It is an awsome size.

How old do you think it might be? 30's, 40's or later?

I would guess more like 50's from the one I had. They are certainly big lumps and when I queried the small size of the glasses was told that because as the drink matured it increased in strength, hence the small measures. The set I had came from an elderly Hungarian lady whose husbands family lived just outside Prague.
