Hi, I bought this little vase on Sunday, it stands 12cm tall and 8.5cm in diameter. The outside is uneven and bumpy and has a crackled effect, the inside of the vase is smooth with a polished pontil to the base. Does anyone have an thoughts on a maker? Thanks in advance, David

Oiva Toikka designed texture like that for Nuutajärvi. The Range is called "Tahiti".
I do not know if this would be one of them but it is something to check.

gee, it is only Thursday here....j/k :24:
Very nice find!!
-
Thanks for the info PX, I'll get googling tonight ( thats tonight, Thursday antiquerose!! ) :chky:
Cheers guys

There is a mug the same in one of our local antique shops and I believe I have a deep green uranium crackle glass mug made by the same manufacturer. They feel the same.
See here too http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,21920.0.html

I thought it looked a bit like mine too but I'm still no further on finding a maker, not very helpful I'm afraid, other than as confirmation that others exist. http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,21920.0.html

Again thanks for all the input, I hadn't thought of using a UV light and was amazed to find that the green speckles throughout the vase glow. Am I right in thinking that the vase must have some age to it if it includes uranium 'bits'. I googled Oiva Toikka, and this vase has almost identical colouring, but the only Tahiti designs that I could bring up on the net all seemed to have angular shapes whereas this vase is round. After reading the link I had a wee chuckle at Franks comment that they were attributed to Monart, thats why I ended up buying it!!
Thanks everyone, D
-
Hi, I've included some pictures of the ' glowing bits ' and a better view of the crackled bits,
cheers, D
-
Yes, David I looked too. There are some round Tahiti bits too but: no crackle, I think !
Anyhow, I don't mind having referred to them in this thread in case someone later searches something similar. Quickly viewed they do have similarities.
Hope this mystery will be solved one day.

Cheers Andy, I'll keep my eyes on that one, Its definitely by the same maker as mine, seller seems to sell a lot ' Victorian studio handblown glass vases 'Cheers for the heads up, D.
-
I have my doubts about the "Victorian " bit. I think hes just saying that cos its got a pontil mark.
-
I wonder if Stevens and Williams/Royal Brierley is a possibility for these. The vase reminds me of their D107 pattern, which is illustrated in Big Book of Vaseline Glass on p 110 in green uranium crackle and the colours would fit.
-
Thanks Christine, I will see if I can do some digging on the makers you mentioned, I dont have the book you mentioned but I will see whats on the www, thanks far all the help everyone, cheers, D

could this be Nailsea Glass...?
-
Not "Nailsea Glass", which normally has either looped decoration or large "blobs" and I don't think "Nailsea" would include crackled.
-
On a bit of a long shot, I wonder whether these unidentified items (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,33941.msg183581.html#msg183581) might have a connection to the speckled /crackled pieces? Waisted shape and base finishing have some broad similarity.
-
No, Nailsea is another one of those overused words. Nailsea glass is generally white loops on a coloured background, and the Nailsea works closed in the 1870s. These pieces are newer.
I'm not convinced Kev.

Hi, I had a look ( through google images ) at some Nailsea glass and some of the images do look similar, but the vase I have seems to be a lot more ' busy ' All the Nailsea glass that looked similar you could see through quite easily, not so with my little mystery  I also had a look at as much Stevens and Williams / Royal Brierley glass pics and info and just cant see anything that looks right as a maker.AGGHH, still no use worrying I've got loads more I have no idea about either!! This one I think will find its way onto Ebay so if any ones interested watch this space. TO A MOD, is it okay for me to use a link to this thread on my Ebay listing?
Cheers, David
-
Hi KevH, I think your vase and the one I have do look very similar, yours might be a bit more ' waisted ' than mine but I think the best bet so far. So, one little purple vase thought not to be Vasart or Nazeing. ID still unknown

TO A MOD, is it okay for me to use a link to this thread on my Ebay listing?
Cheers, David
Yes that's fine David, but don't add the eBay listing to this topic. ;) You can post that separately in Market Place though.

... I had a look ( through google images ) at some Nailsea glass ...
A lot of the images with a "Nailsea" reference have nothing to do with "Nailsea Glass". And the term "Nailsea" is too often used to describe items with "threaded decoration" - even for items where the threads are clearly machine-formed!
A search on the Board for "Nailsea" will show some earlier discussions on the subject.
