Post by: springfieldkate on May 30, 2010, 10:06:38 PM
Hi this was given to me by my mother in law. she knew I like glass and on closer inspection I have found an engraving "cristal 1(l) 13 and under it all it says france" Any help at knowing what it is? Please i have searched for ages.

This form, especially the thick curl upwards is very reminiscent of Bayel (current name Cristallerie Royale de Champagne). I have one marked with a label, attached here for comparison. And since it is etched France, it's not a big leap. I think the clear ones were made for a longer time, so I can't place it in time. Perhaps someone with a bit more experience can add a likely date?

Has your mother in law owned that piece from new? The engraving to me looks like an amateur has scratched it in.  There is a few french glass houses that made similar if not the same free form bowl such as yours.  Indeed as already mentioned Bayel being one.  Is the base flat and highly polished? or inverted I can't really tell on the photo?  If it is inverted def not Art Vannes but if flat and highly polished it is a possibility of being so.  I own a clear Bayel similar to yours complete with label if you like I can photo for comparison but will be later.

I agree with Margi. It looks as if someone was going to add a "Cristal Daum France"  signature to this (Vannes/ Bayel/ Sèvres) piece but halfway discovered that it takes a steadier hand - and gave up.
