Title: Trumpet like Vase - Chinese Glass (?)
Post by: antiquerose123 on June 01, 2010, 05:48:00 AM
Hi - I got this today.  It is quite nice.  It is about 9 inches tall, with the bottom base about 2.5 inches wide, and the top flare is about 3.5 inches wide.  I assume this is Chinese?  The bottom does have some wear  - but is this real wear, or made to look like wear since most of the *nicks* seem to be closer to the edges.  To me, this is suspect.  I would think a glass being moved around over the years would have wear, or scratches across the total base, not more-so near the edges.  This is part of the reason why I bought it.  I did like the style, but questioned the scratches on the bottom.  I mean, common sense would dictate a glass would have scratches all over the base (somewhat) from being moved here, and there.

So might this be made to look older, or is a older Chinese piece??
I think this is like Question #492 -- about Chinese Glass for me --  ;D :24:

Thanks for your replies -- but still a nice shape.  (I think)

Hi Rose,

I think you brought up an interesting point about the wear to the base...  to be honest, it's something I never thought about i.e. the type of scratches to the base which would suggest age.

I took a look at my glass -- especially the pieces I bought as new about 12 years ago and have used over the years.  I paid particular attention to the pieces which have a flat, polished base.  Some of them do have a few nicks and scratches only around the edges.  I suspect this is from some years of picking up a vase, moving it, putting it back down, etc.  And some of my pieces, especially those which sit on open shelves which are dusted regularly, have scratches across the base -- most probably a result of me sliding the vase over in order to wipe the dust.

So I don't know how much truth your theory holds.  If my pieces have both types of wear (depending on where I keep them and how I use them) then maybe it's not a fool-proof indication of age.

By the way, remember my lovely little pink Skrdlovice Vizner vase?  Jindirch identified it as as being from 1975.  Although over 30 years have passed, it does not have any signs of wear to the base.  It looks like a 'museum' piece.

Anyway, I hope your vase turns out to be something special  ;D

It doesn't look Chinese and the wear looks genuine.

I don't think this is Chinese. Looks like a good piece in my opinion. Don't know who it is by though.

Thanks for the info -- I guess still a mystery.  I was just kinda concern because the scratches were more around the edges -- and not so much on the middle.  You think the whole piece would have some scratches when it has been moved over the years...

I have been googling around but nothing has popped my way yet.

So a ??
