Title: Large red random bubble bowl with folded rim and foot
Post by: glassobsessed on June 05, 2010, 09:17:37 PM
Anyone got any ideas about this large red bowl? Random bubbles, folded rim, cased in clear with clear foot and a large deep (partly) polished pontil mark.
It's a big beast at 18cm in diameter and 17cm tall.

The colour, clear casing and foot push me away from Boda, the folded rim is not really in their style either.

Maybe Polish, or?

Cheers,
John

Lovely colour John and I like the bubbles.  Biot do bubble glass.   I'm not sure their bubble effect isn't a little different though and  whether they finish their bases like that, but  I've had a look at their website and a brief trawl through the searches for topics and I can't see anything similar. Not very helpful really  ::)

Hi John,

If indeed Polish, it could be the work of Zbigniew Horbowy.  He very often used reds and oranges in his pieces, as well as, the very same bubble (soda) effect.  The bases of many of his pieces have the same finish as yours.

Having said that, I haven't seen a top rim on any of his pieces.  But then again, he once said that if he would have a 'zloty' for every piece he designed, he would have been a millionaire by now (he even designed some bottles for Polmos distillery).

Just something to look into.  :)

Thankyou both for your suggestions.

I hadn't considered Biot, funnily enough noticed a yellow bubbly piece today that helpfully had Biot impressed onto a prunt on the front of it.

Zbigniew Horbowy is new to me, been able to find some images and plenty of info, intriguing.

Thanks for finding that Michelle, I had forgotten about your bowl (did read the thread at the time).

I just don't think they are from Boda, I have not seen a piece of Hoglund/Boda in this style with clear casing and the 'feel' and general quality are just not right. I would love to be wrong though.....

I would guess your blue vase doesn't have the signature Ivo, does it have air bubbles?

This has a similar style of folded rim as the red footed bowl: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,29894.msg173706.html#msg173706

I'm not saying something is or is not - but the red one does not seem to be from decorator http://www.sia-homefashion.com/ who are SOOOO international and SOOOO cool - NOT.
Folding rims has become fashionable again in the last 10, 15 years - but there still are original Höglunds out there in the wild, you know....

Thanks Ivo, I'd like it to be a design by Mr H but I just don't think this one is.

The SIA website is slick but I think it's revolting, I really don't like having music played at me like that (not that there is anything particularly wrong with the music). Must be getting older (and crankier)....
