Title: Vase with engraved fish, seaweed and air bubbles -- any ideas?
Post by: Anik R on June 10, 2010, 12:26:42 PM
Hello...

Does anyone recognise this vase?

It is 15cm high, quite heavy and oval in shape.  It's got an engraved fish (not the cleanest of engravings in my opinon) and some seaweed.  It's also got air bubbles which can be felt from the inside of the vase.  The base is polished flat with quite a bit of wear to it.

Aha, the vase has got a pretty nice ring to it when 'pstricked'  :)

Thank you!
Anik

Sorry... one more picture to show the shape of the vase (this time, with tea inside for contrast).

Anik:

I don't recognize the design, but I'm pretty sure it's Scandinavian. Some companies only used paper labels, and some engravers bought blanks from glass factories. 50's, early 60's?

Hi David,

Thank you for your reply...  I also suspect Scandinavian, and it would be nice if it were from the 50s/60s...  :)

Oh, I've got another question:  Does anyone know what kind of fish is engraved on the vase? (Sorry, I don't know anything about fish except that they are horrible, smelly creatures which more often than not keep me out of any natural body of water.  Bleh...)

Now, if you'd asked about the fish first, you would have had an immediate positive response. It's very rare species found only on 50 and 60's Scandinavian vases (and some bowls). Not very good eating, though.

David, your knowledge astounds me  :24:  If only I could be as clever...  :kissy:

Christine, it probably is some goldfishy-fish.  So let the official name be:  Rare Scandinavian Fancy Goldfish Type Thingy (or RA-SCA-FAN-GO-TY-TH)...  Yep, 'rascafangotyth' it is.

Unless, of course, we let ourselves get romantic about it and decide it's a very rare scandinavian betta which lost most of its fins in a desperate battle over territory... or a woman.      But that would be way too sad.

SNAP yay i win  ;D
We have had this little one for about 5 years its just 10.5cms tall no markings at all so unfortunitly i cant help with an ID but i have always thought it to be by one of the scandi glassworks, nice quality glass, well exucuted.
Even though this is one from Jon's fishy collection i do really like this one, infact its probably one of my favourite of his fish themed pieces. (P.S you would hate it in our house, no real fish but at one point well over 100 glass fish, although ive made him get rid of a few as they where taking over no room for my glass  >:D)

Hi Michelle...  We're almost like family now -- our vases are sibblings  ;D

It would be nice to know the maker, but I suppose that if you haven't been able to find out in the last 5 years, we might never know...

Thank you for taking the time to reply and your picture...  By the way, I've got no problems with glass fish -- they are my favorite kind!

Hi Anik
Jon found this on ebay same as our vases it is stickered with a retail label S Christian of Copenhagen Inc. San Francisco, the seller says this company has been out of business for over 35 years and that they specialized in Scandinavian crystal. Size given "Height  6" Base 2.5" Top 3" by 5"

At least it confirms the Scandinavian origin of the vase and the approximate date. They sold quite a variety of makers, if I remember.

Thanks David, thought it may be another piece of the puzzle to one day getting a positive ID on this vase.
It is as i said previously a nicely made vase with quality workmanship.
The one on ebay is around the same size as Aniks too

Ah, thank you, Michelle!  It's lovely to stumble upon a clue after years of mystery.  :)

So Anik, 'Never say Never'....somewhere along the way, someone somewhere will find another match....but, is it Orrefors?  Or is the eBay seller assuming it is Orrefors?  There is another fish vase on eBay at the moment, that is Orrefors that is signed very clearly on the base.......surely yours and Michelle's would be signed if it were Orrefors? Shall we keep on looking for another one? Could it be Danish Glass....???Holmegaard???
