Title: Pink vase with white swirl and pullled down rim
Post by: astrid on June 13, 2010, 07:59:35 AM
I have seen this particular rim on pieces of glass in a book by Langhamer on Bohemian Glass. Those pieces were described as Svoboda, 1993. So, I'm hoping it's a telltale sign of Czech glasswork (and if it's telltale of Svoboda, even better?) On the other hand, if someone tells me it's German or even Murano, I won't be too surprised either. The previous owner sold it because he got tired of trying to identify it (but then he never asked at this forum, so...)

24 cm high, 6 cm diameter at the base. Polished pontil base. No marks.

Any ideas or observations?

Bumping this mystery vase - I still have no clue whatsoever, so any observations, speculations, similarities welcome. Ruling out certain options would help me too. If you feel it can't be Czech or Murano, feel free to tell me why it's unlikely.

Makora?

Well, I've walked through the current Makora catalogue a few times, and their patterns seem to be more bold and colourful than my vase, while the rim shape of my vase doesn't come up. The current Polish trend seems to me mostly opaque with bold bright colour used often in contrasts and big shapes - that's why I wasn't thinking in that direction so far.

That doesn't mean it can't be Polish, though - but maybe from a number of years ago or a different style maker? Have you seen any similar styled pieces known to be Polish perhaps?

PS - I'm not sure if the pictures do it justice, but to me it feels like a decent quality glass piece and handmade, as far as I can tell.

the treatment seemed similar... and they keep changing the selection three times per year. :hi:

oops that was not the pic i was looking for - streaks of milky white flecks in a semi spiral used to point at Makora...

I've checked some of the older Makora threads on this forum, and I can see what you mean - it's not the kind of thing they currently do, but it feels similar to somewhat older work. And Polish would for me explain the mix of style elements that do not clearly point to German, Czech or Italian.

Enough to convince me so far, I'll put it down as probably Polish. If it is, we'll never find one with a label to really confirm it, alas.
