Title: UNUSUAL HANGING ART GLASS VASE - who?
Post by: singingyamada on June 26, 2010, 02:30:12 AM
G'day

I have to say my glass education has gone vertical since lurking here and meeting some real ethical knnowlegable sellers.  However we all have our weakness and I bought this

I must say i dont know if its the madness or genius, tat or  a tops thing,.  It may win the ugly award. ::)
Its heavy and has a polished pontil .  any ideas.

We need pictures of the real thing please including the base, as ebay links disappear. I can only say I have never seen anything like it!

I'll go out on a limb here and say Japanese once again. That orange and white combo I have seen used many times in Japanese pieces, especially Hineri. I like these orange and white pieces the most.

I'm with Kane. With the opaque white layers, it really looks very much like Japanese glass - but I couldn't say for sure, as all I know about is what turns up labelled on eBay, and have no idea about which labels are from factories, which are exporters or importers, or about designers or dates.

David Encill had some contact with researchers of Japanese glass at one stage. I wonder whether anything came of that.

singing, is it possible to get some pics of the holes for the ring and chains? Does it look like the holes were made at time of manufacture or do you thing they were made later? I have never seen a glass hanging basket before. Very interesting.

I think this actually started life of as a vase and the holes were drilled in later to create a hanging basket. And no! I don't think this is Japanese because of your name. I have owned quite a few Japanese pieces of glass. Mostly in orange and white. I don't know why, but I have a fondness for this colour and also Japanese glass in general. I find most people are turned off by Japanese glass but I would rather find a good piece of this than something chinese or murano <  :o!

I am finding it harder these days to find a good piece of Japanese glass even at a charity shop!

I am sorry wasnt meaning to offend.  it just that cause we are down here we do get a lot of stuff from Asia.
I have a feeling it possibly started off as a vase.  I have fallen in love with Czech glass thanks to mark hill.
Oh if I cold have the time I lived in again..........however......

If you want to meet me at the selling and buying thread thats oK

hard to say whether it was made to hang or to stand, without seeing catalogues. If we could find out more about Japanese glass, it would definitely become more collectable. It had a style of its own, although obviously influenced by Murano and Czechoslovakian glass.

No offence taken. I agree cathy. Would be interesting if a book on Japanese Glass came out. I would be first in line for it!

It needs someone who can speak Japanese, who can travel there, contact companies and unearth catalogues. My brother is fluent in Japanese and lives there, but completely uninterested, unfortunately.
